G-20 opponents, police clash on Pittsburgh streets

PITTSBURGH — Police fired canisters of pepper spray and smoke at marchers protesting the Group of 20 summit Thursday after anarchists responded to calls to disperse by rolling trash bins and throwing rocks.

The afternoon march turned chaotic at just about the time that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived for a meeting with leaders of the world's major economies.

The clashes began after hundreds of protesters, many advocating against capitalism, tried to march from an outlying neighborhood toward the convention center where the summit is being held.

The protesters banged on drums and chanted "Ain't no power like the power of the people, 'cause the power of the people don't stop."

The marchers included small groups of self-described anarchists, some wearing dark clothes and bandanas and carrying black flags. Others wore helmets and safety goggles.

One banner read, "No borders, no banks," another, "No hope in capitalism." A few minutes into the march, protesters unfurled a large banner reading "NO BAILOUT NO CAPITALISM" with an encircled "A," a recognized sign of anarchists.

I happened to catch a “Let’s Go Pens!” when the local news was showing film of the protestors and their signs. There, amid all the super-seriousness of the professional protestors, were Pittsburghers reminding everyone of what was most important in this town. Global warming and anti-capitalism be dammed - we want another Stanley Cup!

They’ve been staying in abandoned houses in Lawrenceville/Bloomfield. I was expecting so much more violence ie the Seattle of years ago. I was driving by the 40th street Bridge to get home and was counting the protest stragglers. Guys with man purses... clearly not from Pittsburgh. They cleared out 1,000 prisoners from the jail to make room for these fools, but it seems they aren’t too keen on being arrested.

They are just using these idiots to bring on Martial Law/Control.

I believe you are right, Unkus. The tea parties and townhalls have been peaceful, much to their disappointment, I'm sure, so time to initiate the riots themselves. Lousy, manipulative commies.

Hard to know if they are still causing trouble, but the “protestors” were breaking windows in other neighborhoods tonight. Local news cut off when it started getting dicey. People would not disperse, protestors changed clothes to blend in with Pitt students.

Makes one wonder how many of these protesters are part of
Zero’s college volunteers that are working toward their promised degree and I would guess that the ones with their faces covered are paid protesters that were bused in. Don’t
some of you freepers know any of the cops around this area
that you could ask a couple questions ? Mr/Mrs Zero is loving
all this because it’s a small part of their overall agenda!

Brian Todd, CNN, when they tell you to leave or get tear gassed that means YOU LEAVE!

Pittsburgh G20 Resistance Project

Thursday, September 24, will feature a People’s Uprising, a mass march to disrupt the G-20 summit. We’ll be starting at Arsenal Park at 2:30 pm in Lawrenceville, a vibrant working class community in the city, and marching to the G-20 summit downtown. Our theme is “Power from Below, Not Impositions from Above.” Our only permit is our feet and voices. The G-20 is in the house, throwing a party. Let’s crash it.

Friday, September 25, we’ll be working to undermine the G-20 summit by attacking their power, making connections to the local manifestations of their neoliberal agenda. The folks that gather in the convention center represent large governments that draw their power from collusion with powerful corporations, governments that draw their wealth from resource extraction and destruction to our world, and governments that maintain their forces through the direct violence of police forces and militaries. Without these structural supports, their power will disintegrate. The G-20 is in a house of cards: let’s shake the table.

The action working group of the Pittsburgh G-20 Resistance Project has drawn up a list of 100 potential targets, and many groups will be claiming a destination somewhere in the city. We call for these coordinated actions to end at 11:30 am in which we will demonstrate: we do not need to be together physically to be together in struggle.

We encourage people to form affinity groups with those that they know and trust, to have a familiar faces to stick with in the streets and people to organize and take action with. An affinity group is when you get together with folks who are on the same page as you about what kind of action you want to do.

Judging by the sign most of them are carrying, it doesn’t look like they’re protesting big government at all. Does that say “Job for All” under the picture of Martin Luther King? I also see one that says “Healtcare NOT Warfare.”

Sorry, I don’t buy that I have anything in common with these clowns. I certainly have nothing in common with their fellow travelers whose idea of making a political point is trashing the property of their fellow citizens.

The anarchists have a "recognized sign"? I don't think this writer has any idea what an anarchist actually is. Next he'll be saying they have formal meetings, and bylaws, and dues, and tidy up the area after their demonstrations are over.

OK now looking at the picture of the cops in the vegetable market. Am i the only one thinking they should have brought a trebuchet. Come on think of the fun. Hit a hippy with a cantaloupe, win a prize. Or bring in one of those big pumpkin cannons for long range artillery support. Sure they want to establish a socialist utopia, just let them try it with a watermelon up side their heads.

I was actually thinking the same thing. As soon as the anarchists start throwing stuff, they get heavier stuff thrown right back at them.

I'm thinking a compressed-air-powered catapult tossing 20 pound water balloons (heavy nylon case) would do a number on them. All the photographers would get would be impressive splashes from the water balloon impacts, which would not look bad, but they would hit like hell.

Neither do these "anarchists". They're actually Communists. The only part of government they want to eliminate is the part that protects private property and prevents their taking stuff via Mob Rule.
