INGLESIDE Naval Station Ingleside came one step closer to shutting its gates Tuesday, decommissioning the bases Mine Warfare Training Center.
The center served to train more than 42,000 sailors for shipboard mine counter measures. The facility was decommissioned as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round, which ordered the consolidation of the center with Fleet Anti-submarine Warfare Training Center San Diego, Calif.

This base should never have been commissioned. It was political from the start and political at the end. I was over at Mainside when it was proposed and it was a bad idea then and one of the few BRAC decisions I have ever agreed with.

Back when it was proposed, the US was supporting the Contras against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and the Reagan administration wanted a naval base closer to central America.
Could we call it “The Crawler-Times?”
