I suppose I should have been tipped off by the fact that the surgeon who performed my 84-year-old Mom's angioplasty on Friday at Toronto General Hospital couldn't be bothered to check up on her afterward. This same surgeon discharged her Saturday morning from TGH - by phone.

I would say, don’t go to TGH.
When clicking on the article link, I strongly encourage all to read the attached comments. Just WOW! is all I can say about some of the stories, both the article and in the comments, about conditions and lack of treatment.
Aside from the stories about inadequate patient care, the comment about a nurse in flip flops was astounding!
I realize that medical costs are high, no matter where you are. But Canada is not a 3rd world country and they have only a fraction of the US population. Why can’t they pay for good medical care?
Plus, everywhere the Canadian system is discussed, people make negative comments about how patients are treated. It doesn’t take money to treat people with decency and kindness. Why can’t they take care of their own in a civilized manner?
The Medical employees are union I.e. lazy, miserable and dumb.
My wife had a stomach ache, a bad stomach ache. So I took her to the emergency room, remember this is a stomach ache not a trauma. She was in a gown, laying in a gurney and in a privet exam room in less then ten minutes. Nurses came by and checked her at least every 5 minutes and were very attentive and courteous. First doctor comes in, checks her over and orders an ultra sound but could not determine what it was. Specialist comes in orders a MRI, now suspects appendicitis. Then surgeon comes, does some poking around and confirms diagnoses. Less then an hour and a half later she is in the recovery room after a successful appendectomy using some kind of scope. Soon after she is moved to a room and we are both asked if they can get us anything and offered to setup a cot for me. Not an hour later she is on her feet to go to the bathroom, a very good sign after surgery. Next morning she is released and completely healed in a couple of weeks. The hospital was amazing, it felt more like a 5 star hotel then a hospital. We were in and out in less then 18 hours. But the bill was over $24000.00, insurance paid all but a $10.00 drug co-payment. Obviously our health care is in crises and needs fixed to look more like Canada's health care.
As far as I can tell, Canadian style health care is great, as long as you don’t get real sick. If you come down with a serious illness, you’re pretty much done for.

This is a side effect of socialization. Workers in any socialized system are unmotivated, not encouraged, not peoperly rewarded and not striving for self-improvement. This results in your better prepared/motivated people to leave. The remaining people get even further demotivated and bitter with time, and after a few years you end up with this, for lack of a better word, sub-human behavior towards their fellow human beings.
Great story and probably typical for most Americans’ experience with the health care system.
I haven’t thought about appendicitis for awhile, but I know that people who had appendectomies years ago often spent weeks in the hospital. What a long way medicine has come if you can have that kind of surgery and be out the next day!
