EU relief as Ireland backs treaty in new poll

Ireland voted strongly in favour of the European Union's Lisbon Treaty, overturning a stunning No vote and taking a key step towards ending the 27-nation bloc's deadlock, ministers said Saturday.

Europe Minister Dick Roche told AFP he expected "overwhelming" backing for the treaty in a second referendum, called after a June 2008 No vote, while Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin predicted a "convincing win."

The No camp conceded defeat even before official results were published, after informal exit polls pointed to a 60 per cent vote in favour of the treaty -- designed to streamline decision-making in the expanding European bloc.

"The Irish people have asserted their trust in the political establishment of this country who have promised them jobs for a Yes vote and economic recovery," said Declan Ganley, who led the victorious No campaign last year.

Ireland's three million voters -- who alone among the EU's 500 million citizens have a referendum on the treaty -- delivered a stunning blow to the bloc in June 2008, when they rejected the reform treaty by 53.4 per cent.

A second No vote would have effectively killed the treaty, which notably creates a new full-time EU president and foreign minister.

So sad to post this. Another country submitting itself to Big Brother Brussels, the revived Roman Empire.

The Irish voted it down the first time because their economy was doing well and they saw no reason to get further entangled with Europe, not least because they feared a threat to their military neutrality. They had been neutral—and sometimes obnoxiously pious about it—in both WW2 and the Cold War. Now their economy is on the ropes and they look for Europe’s skirts to hide beneath. A principled crowd they are not.

Isn’t it a hoot how many elections they call until they get the desired results. Then the voting is well respected and no other votes can be taken.

I wager that within ten years people will be screaming bloody murder and wanting more votes. Guess what you gullible people. You’re not going to get them then.

Look for the EU to repay the Irish by flooding Ireland with Muslims now that they have relinquished their sovereignty.

Yes, and it was reported last week that our “globalist” top hi-tech firm, Intel, spend a ton of money in Ireland promoting the “yes” vote for the EU. No surprise to me, after I learned a couple years ago that they were building a new fab plant in Vietnam.

I agree with your points. In Minnesota, we had a similiar thing.

The Minnesota Twins wanted a new baseball stadium. Their billionaire owner didn’t wanna pay for it. Instead he wanted US to pay for it.

From 1998 thru 2006, they repeatedly went to the Legislature and were rebuffed. They refused to take NO for an answer. They’d hear the legislature say NO and they took that to mean “Maybe”.

They kept pushing and pushing ‘til they got their way - a new pro baseball stadium funded primarily with taxpayer dollars. And worse yet, voters in Hennepin County were denied the right to have a referendum as to whether we wished to be taxed for it or not.

It’s amazing to me that a small nation that had to fight so hard for its independence is willing to give it up so easily and after such a short period of time.

I know those stadiums bring in tax dollars, but you and I are of the same mind on this. It gauls me to see the deals these franchise owners get from cities.

That voting situation sounds about par for the course. Makes your blood boil doesn’t it.

And the Irish will hate it.

EU wants to turn Ireland into Irabia.

What’s with the Euro elitist plan to let Europe be colonized by swarms of Muzzies? Civil war between the native Europeans and Muzzies is what they want, right?

But that will turn into a nightmare, as wide scale street fighting erupts between the native Europeans and the Muzzies, resulting in unprecedented bloodshed.
