Militant fighters streaming from an Afghan village and a mosque attacked a pair of remote outposts near the Pakistani border, killing eight U.S. soldiers and as many as seven Afghan forces in one of the fiercest battles of the eight-year war.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the deadliest attack for coalition forces since a similar raid in July 2008 killed nine American soldiers in the same mountainous region known as an al-Qaida haven. The U.S. has already said it plans to pull its soldiers from the isolated area to focus on Afghan population centers.
Fighting began around dawn Saturday and lasted several hours, punctuated by American airstrikes. Jamaludin Badar, governor of Nuristan province, said the two outposts were on a hill one near the top and one at the foot of the slope flanked by the village on one side and the mosque on the other.
Nearly 300 militant fighters flooded the lower, Afghan outpost then swept around it to reach the American station on higher ground from both directions, said Mohammad Qasim Jangulbagh, the provincial police chief. The U.S. military statement said the Americans and Afghans repelled the attack by tribal fighters and "inflicted heavy enemy casualties."

Prayers for the soldiers and their families!
Praying we make it through the next 3 years.
With the damage done in the first one so far, I worry about the world we will leave our grandchildren.
Didn’t the idiots in charge change the Rules of Engagement to something like this:
“Halt, I am a NATO troop and must warn you that deadly force will be used if you do not put down your weapon. You will only be given 3 chances to comply and then I will forced to read you Miranda rights and make a lawful shooting...”
God bless our troops. Pray for them. Only God can help them - they have no Commander In Chief.
Let's get one thing straight---there are no Afghan "forces," no Afghan National "Army," just a large collection of heterogeneous tribes that hate each other and anyone they consider to be foreigners.
Either nuke the place or get our people out since Obama's disastrous ROEs as well as his obvious vacillation and weakness are getting U.S. servicemen killed.
Moreover, while they were fighting and dying, Obama was out partying with Michelle last night. That ought to tell everyone where his priorities lie.
Ditto !!
Some of the insurgents came out of a mosque to attack our troops.
The terrorists SMELL weakness in president HOLLYWOOD and they are taking full advantage of it....DAMN JOKER!! I loathe the mediaPUKES for sheltering this moron and NOT speaking the truth on the TOKER!! I wish the General would be more vocal for the sake of our brave men and women on the battle field. SOMEONE in the military has to be bold enough to take on president HOLLYWOOD!! Screw protocol...SOLDIERS ARE DYING! GOD HELP US!
Yeah, I know. I’ve got a very good friend in the Virginia National Guard who’s currently assigned to one of those isolated outposts in Nuristan on the Paki border. I’m trying to find out if he’s O.K., but am having no luck. His family has heard nothing either, and DoD appears to be very confused about what is going on this morning.
I’ll keep your friend and his family in my prayers this morning.
How ridiculous.
The decisions leading to the inevitable disaster in Afghanistan were made by George W. Bush in November 2001. His persistent universalist and limited-war delusions (probably based on his inadequate grasp of Christianity) have brought us to the place we are at in Afghanistan.
Of course, the foolish choice by the American people of the man calling himself "Barack Obama" has made the situation worse. But even that foolish choice was engendered by Bush's incompetence in turning a war that should have been over in six months into an open-ended mission to turn illiterate savages into a modern nation.
Be fair to little Barry. The place should have been nuked before Christmas 2001, and you and I both know it.
The "mission" defined by George W. Bush is incapable of accomplishment. OF COURSE having an affirmative-action zero in charge has made things worse.
But only Paul W. Tibbits could have made it better, and he died in 2007.
Right on, my brother - and the concept of an "Iraqi nation", or for that matter "Pakistan" are not far behind on the George W. Bush delusion meter.
It is impossible to win a war, or even to make a coherent plan, without the ability to see things as they are.
The inability of George W. Bush and his inner circle to see the nature of the enemy, and to marshall a force to defeat him when the people were prepared for war, has led us into the situation where we find ourselves today.
Thanks Jim, well said. And to all the poeple here who agree that this war is insane, thank you too. The world is laughing at the US, while good men die. And the sad thing is that we cannot do anything about it because the democrats are hiding behind black, just like the Taliban are hiding behind children.
Obama is dilly dallying while Americans are being killed.
Obama should be removed from office for failing to uphold the Constitution and dereliction of duty as CIC.
The AP story “forgets” to mention the KIA totals...how convenient...
wipe that afghan village and mosque off the face of the earth
you lose more lives playing defense, than going on the offence. To win you don’t pacify the enemy, you destroy the enemy. THAT is a well proven fact - and historical.
