Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics after the Brazilian city won a landslide victory over Madrid in the final round of voting on Friday.

-snip-

Chicago went out after polling just 18 votes in the first round, despite the eloquent speeches on their behalf made by Obama, the first sitting U.S. president to address an IOC session, and first lady Michelle Obama.

In April 2007, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama stood with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, left, and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley at a rally celebrating the USOC's decision to pick Chicago as the candidate city to vie for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Flawed from the start

What is this constant cr*p about "eloquent" speeches? Do these jerks ever actually LISTEN to what Obama says, or even bother to read the transcripts?

The way to win an Olympic bid is to demonstrate that your city is hot to go and ready to put on a really great Olympics with lots of viewers. Plenty of money. Plenty of local support. Great facilities. An attractive location.

So, what does Obama say in his speech? What he always says: "I . . . I . . . I . . . I . . . I . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . me . . . . uh, uh, uh, uh."

Yeah, I'm sure that really impressed the committee.

I never cared about the Olympics at all except the year Nancy and Tonya Harding got into the cat fight....Now that was the Olympics!!!!

Actually, it was an unprovoked, sudden, and brutal assault and battery on Nancy Kerrigan by Tonya's then-husband, Jeff Gilooly. Kerrigan's injury forced her withdrawal.

After Harding admitted to helping to cover up the attack, the USFSA and United States Olympic Committee initiated proceedings to remove her from the 1994 Olympic team, but Harding retained her place after threatening legal action.[5] She finished eighth, while Kerrigan, who recovered from her injuries, finished second.

Uh, oh. I’ll bet the Chicago crowd promised King Zero and Queen Sasquash that the opening ceremonies would include a grand entrance by the two of them in Sedan chairs with 200 courtiers lovingly hoisting them, to the strains of a 1000 piece orchestra playing “All Hail Obama”, composed especially for the occasion, and with the crowd on its feet roaring approval, until the crowd is signaled to fall to its knees when the Royal pair exit their Sedan chairs to ascend the 500 steps to their thrones to watch the games...

Oh, well, maybe Dear Leader can take First Frump to a show in NYC to make up for the disappointment.

There doesn't appear to be a lot of money to be made at the municipal bonding level though. These games are mostly losers. You can make money with the Pan Am Games, and with ordinary sporting events.

The Olympics ain't it!

There wasn’t really a cat fight, Tonya had some joker bask Nancy in the leg with a bat. Not much cat fighting there. There was a good scene though where Tonya cried to the judges that her shoe lace had come untied and she needed another chance, didn’t work though.

I agree. For many people, the coverage of a large spectacle event such as the Olympics lets us see another city that we probably would never see. I am all for the Olympics in Rio, a friend of mine has visited and said it was an awesome place. Sure, it needs some work, but hosting the Olympics will resolve many problems with greatly needed infrastructure and technology improvements.

As a TV viewer I would be much more inclined to tune in to Rio coverage over Chicago coverage. I have been to Chicago, sure its nice, but I would much rather see Rio.

Those two probably didn’t learn a thing — I can see her saying it was because the IOC is racist. That seems to be the operative word of Democrats when it doesn’t go the way this President wants.

I was in Atlanta in 96 and remember the humidity not being great there as well...very hot...it just seems like Miami has so much more to offer than Chicago. It’s like it is built for it already.

People are saying that this is a loss to America and not Obama...

I know what you're saying but the only thing I'm REALLY concerned about right now is our military in harm's way what with this backwards-priority, celebrity worshipping clown in the WH.

Nothing else to me comes close than this concern. We didn't lose in VN but the 60s hippies, the Leftwing press and its minions caused us to defund the mission, sell out our loyal allies as the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot so clearly illustrated what ruthlessness is all about.

VN was a quagmire, AG is the graveyard of empires/nations.

We need to pull our troops out of nuke striking distance (pockystain... cough cough... EEran) at the least!
