One way to judge a person is to look at who his enemies are and how vociferous they are.

Applying this standard to Nixon a makes him saint. (though I would not classify him as such) He definitely did the right thing in this case. Wisdom AND backbone!

It is amazing how the Left vilifies Nixon.

Nixon was a very strong anti-communist and the liberals/socialists never forgot that or forgave him. IMO, watergate was more about revenge of his anti-communism than any break-in - esp since it was Dean who ordered the break-in.

On the last anniversary of Watergate, C-SPAN had Woodward and Bernstein on to discuss it. During the Q&A someone from the audience asked, "If you subtracted Watergate, wouldn't you consider Nixon to be a pretty good president?"

I thought Bernstein would have a heart attack. He jumped up screaming that, "You can never subtract Watergate!! Its the most important event of the 20th century!!!! And Richard Nixon was EVIL!!!"

The media will never allow a true assessment of Nixon. He was an anti-Communist, therefore he must be destroyed and stay destroyed.
