Coke Didn't Make America Fat
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 10-07-09 | MUHTAR KENT

Americans need more exercise, not another tax.

Obesity is a complex issue, and addressing it is important for all Americans. We at the Coca-Cola company are committed to working with government and health organizations to implement effective solutions to address this problem.

But a number of public-health advocates have already come up with what they think is the solution: heavy taxes on some routine foods and beverages that they have decided are high in calories. The taxes, the advocates acknowledge, are intended to limit consumption of targeted foods and help you to accept the diet that they have determined is best.

Yeah, but I’d hit two slices of toast and some jelly.

Taxing soft drinks is just another government money grab, to which I am totally opposed. As for the issue of sugar-laden soft drinks causing obesity—obviously, that is just one of many factors. But, some simple mathematics might be instructive.

Ingesting 3500 calories more than a person burns up will cause one pound of weight gain. Let’s compare two individuals who have the same metabolism and who do the same amount of exercise and have identical diets, except that one drinks a Regular Coke per day (155 calories)and the other drinks Diet Coke (0 calories.) At the end of one year, the Regular Coke drinker will have consumed 155*365=56,575 more calories than his Diet Coke drinking clone. If the latter has no weight gain after a year, the former will have gained 56,575/3500 = 16 lbs. And that’s just in one year, assuming one 12 oz. Regular Coke per day.

Doesn't matter how you "justify" it, as long as the government gets more money.

Soon, they will put a tax on 'fried' foods. After all, those are predominately Southern ... and French.

I used to do that too, until I moved to the big city. If you burn 600 calories in the morning b4 you eat, you force yourself to burn fat stores...

We had Coke machines in my school in the late 70s/early 80s and we had hardly any fat kids. We had frequent bake sales in school (NYC just banned school bake sales) and one class sold donuts every Friday as a fundraiser...but we also walked to the bus stop, were involved in sports, spent part of the day feeding farm animals and then the other part cleaning our rooms. We did not spend much time watching TV and none messing around on the computer...

It *is* disturbing to see so many fat little kids these days, but I am really sick of the nanny state.

You and people like you are the exceptions. In my opinion, formed by years of observation, most obese people would rather eat a ton than lose weight. They won’t admit it but it is true. They also lie to themselves about the amount they eat. Every fat person I know eats like a horse. While I was not obese, I was heading in that direction. I finally decided to lose the weight and lost 30 pounds. I am amazed now by how much less I eat than before. I also find it fascinating to watch my overweight relatives eat.

Sorry, according to the left the only part of your body you control and own are a few cubic inches in your abdomen, and that's only if you're a woman.

Isn’t it funny? I have to diet like a crazy person and exercise in order to be thin (I’ve fallen off the wagon and am now trying to crawl back on). And my husband can eat whatever and while I can’t say he never gains anything, he has had a modest weight gain over the past 33 years, and actually looks better at his current weight than he did at his younger weight.
I see more men with that metabolism than women tho. Not sure why, but likely something to do with child bearing.
