If he said that, then it probably meets the criteria for extortion. I don't know the exact law in New York, but I suspect that rises to the level of "threatening harm or embarrassment".

It’s only blackmail if he was promising to keep the story itself (not just the text of the screenplay treatment) silent in exchange for payment.

Meanwhile we STILL do not know who forged the National Guard memos, do we? Was there ever prosecution by the government for the forged officer’s signature?

John Edwards was being kept viable by the DNC run presstitutes to keep Hillary in a losing 3 way race for delegates. I doubt that NONE of them knew about his affair. The press has shown they will cover up personal failings. They let Obama continue to lie about his quitting tobacco.

I fail to understand the logic of why being a "friend of Bill" discredits the National Enquirer story.

For what reason would Bill find it advantageous to out a crappy lib-friendly comedian?

Uh, this happens to the rich & famous fairly often when a writer has a sordid story on someone.

The rich & famous buy the rights to the story. It is a shade away from blackmail - but perfectly legal.

Think about it. If a coworker knew you were having an affair and came to you and said he was going to write a story about an affair and was pretty sure anyone that read it would know it was you he was writing about - what he is doing is not illegal - and how much would you buy the story from him for?

My prediction: haldeman walks & writes a book about it.

I didn’t bring it up to indicate why a National Enquirer story would be false. I brought it up to mention a possible reason that they were the ONLY media outlet pursuing the story behind John Edward’s bastard child.

The media covered it up to keep his candidacy viable and keep Hillary out.

Now the tabloids are claiming an ugly divorce is looming for Letterman.

I always wondered what was Dave Letterman's obsession with Sarah Palin. I saw a picture of his wife, and maybe it is resentment that he is not married to someone who looks like Palin or Palin failed to show interest in him. Seems Letterman thinks he is God's gift to women.

Letterman's joke about Willow Palin was so over the top, much worse than anything Imus ever said.

“Hi folks, people always complain that I keep this studio ice cold, but I how else am going to keep the intern’s headlights on?

Tough week for me folks. The National Enquirer is reporting that my wife is leaving me. Absolutely not true. She’s just going back to college—which mean our sex life should be heating up.

People say Dave if you were gonna cheat, why do it with some dumpy underling when you could have been banging models—But I follow Bill Clinton’s rule: It’s not sex if she doesn’t put down the Pringles can.

You know when you compare me to the other cheating scumbags out there I’m not that bad. I didn’t knock her up like Edwards. I didn’t run off to Argentina like Sanford. And most importantly, I didn’t misuse the international gay morse code like Larry Craig.”

Another consideration

The police had Letterman’s attorney meet one more time (before the check was handed over), specifically for the purpose of getting Haldeman to say that he knew this was illegal, and was backmail, and reportedly Haldeman said, yes, he understood. This is supposedly on tape.
