Swine Flu Put Many Hospitalized Patients Into ICU Swine flu killed 7 pct of hospitalized US patients; ICU's in Australia hard-hit, study shows
One quarter of Americans sick enough to be hospitalized with swine flu last spring wound up needing intensive care and 7 percent of them died, the first such study of the early months of the global epidemic suggests. That's a little higher than with ordinary seasonal flu, several experts said.
What is striking and unusual is that children and teens accounted for nearly half of the hospitalized cases, including many who were previously healthy. The study did not give a breakdown of deaths by age.
"Contrary to the perception among many people that this influenza, novel H1N1, is mild, these data vividly demonstrate that influenza can make you very, very ill," said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University flu expert and spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
"Clearly, the best way to protect yourself and your family is to get vaccine as soon as it becomes available," said Schaffner, who had no role in the study but has consulted for swine flu vaccine makers.
The study was done by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working with hospitals and state and local health departments. Results were published online Thursday by the New England Journal of Medicine.
A second study released by the journal revealed that swine flu had a profound effect on intensive care units in Australia and New Zealand from June through August winter months and the normal flu season in the Southern Hemisphere.

This doesn’t pass the smell test.
one quarter of what number? as I remember there were not that many cases this spring.. and if they were that severe old Nappy would of been on tv hrly, instead of bi hrly, dragging out a picture of some one hospitalized.there we go again with a ghost number of 7% of what number died... the spring fling was to cover up the NYC AF1 flight, and keep peoples mind off of that mess up ... it is supposed to be so bad now, but I dont see old Nappy on tv, telling us much about it..
I don’t have all the right numbers, but the swine flu at the moment is just as “deadly” as the regular seasonal flu. I thought it was a higher mortality rate (like 1.5%), but a quick search found a rate of 0.4% - and that is believed to be high.
But, 7% of folks that get all the way to the ICU sounds feasible.
Just making a quick guess at some numbers. Say 2,000 folks get sick with the flu. Half of those visit the doctor. 10% of those go to the hospital (so 100). Of those, 25 get admitted to the ICU. And 7% of those (about 2) will die. So 2 out of 2,000 die - mortality rate of 0.1%.
I imagine another search of how many estimated sick with the flu this year versus deaths would bring reality to these numbers.
ABC (aka the All-Brrrackkk-Channel)says it's best to get the H1N1 vaccine.
To which I firmly say "SCREW YOU". (As Rush so eloquently put it...)
The pig flu vaccine is much more dangerous to your health than running about “unprotected”.
The goobermint can take their pig flu vaccine and their fear/crisis mongering over it and stuff it all where the sun don’t shine.
Give the stoopid pig flu vaccine to all the goobermint slackers. That is a huge and growing number of the population.
Here’s a recent table. Shows in the U.S., for the 20 or so first days in September there were 10,000 hospitalizations and 936 deaths (about 9% rate). Please excuse the lousy formatting.

U.S. Influenza and Pneumonia-Associated Hospitalizations
and Deaths from August 30 September 19, 2009
Posted September 25, 2009, 11:00 AM ET
Data reported to CDC by September 22, 2009, 12:00 AM ET
Cases Defined by...................Hospitalizations...Deaths
Influenza and Pneumonia Syndrome* .......8,392.........822
Influenza Laboratory-Tests**.............1,690.........114
Totals:..........................................10,082.........936
*Reports can be based on syndromic, admission or discharge data, or a combination of data elements that could include laboratory-confirmed and influenza-like illness hospitalizations.
**Laboratory confirmation includes any positive influenza test (rapid influenza tests, RT-PCR, DFA, IFA, or culture), whether or not typing was done.
This table is based on data from a new influenza and pneumonia hospitalizations and deaths web-based reporting system that will be used to monitor trends in activity. This is the third week of data from this new system. The table shows aggregate reports of all influenza and pneumonia-associated hospitalizations and deaths (including 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu) since August 30, 2009 received by CDC from U.S. states and territories. This table will be updated weekly each Friday at 11 a.m. For the 2009-2010 influenza season, states are reporting based on new case definitions for hospitalizations and deaths effective August 30, 2009.
CDC will continue to use its traditional surveillance systems to track the progress of the 2009-2010 influenza season. For more information about influenza surveillance, including reporting of influenza-associated hospitalizations and deaths, see Questions and Answers: Monitoring Influenza Activity, Including 2009 H1N1.
The number of 2009 H1N1 hospitalizations and deaths reported to CDC from April August 2009 is available on the Past Situation Updates page.

New website to post true stories of your flu vaccine experience....

Natural News, now there’s a reliable source. Not. When did FR become hippie central? I’ll take modern medicine over hippie quackery any day. It’s a pity that some so-called conservatives have fallen for the hippie schill.
Being an ICU/Trauma Nurse for 30 years, you realize that even though we are blessed by great medical research centers and pharmaceuticals, “modern medicine” doesn't always have all the answers.
Boy, are they hyping this or what?
Very poor journalism!!! This headline is misleading. The swine flu killed 7% of the 25% of those who were hospitalized for the swine flu. It did not kill 7% of hospitalized US patients! If I remember my math correctly, that means the mortality rate would be 1.7%. I read recently that the mortality rate for this flu was very similar to any other flu in years past but that those affected were a different demographic (which is disconcerting.)
And to mention the occupancy rate of the ICU units in Australia is absolutely irrelevant to us here in the US.
I have seen doctors on TV saying that this flu is becoming LESS dangerous than the seasonal flu. Each mutation seems to make it less of a danger but you have to look hard to catch that amidst all the hype about the danger. There are also doctors saying that the vaccination is a greater danger than the flu but that will be buried in hype as well.
“said Schaffner, who had no role in the study but has consulted for swine flu vaccine makers.”
Another paid off bogeyman cheerleading for the vaccine manufaturers. How much were you paid, Dr. Quack?
When people start dying or becoming chronically sick from the vaccine, there should be a lot of new job openings. So this swine flu vaccine could turn out to be a real shot in the arm for the economy. (pun intended)
