Comment: Absurd Decision On Obama Makes A Mockery Of The Nobel Peace Prize
Michael Binyon
The award of this years Nobel peace prize to President Obama will be met with widespread incredulity, consternation in many capitals and probably deep embarrassment by the President himself.
Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of Americas first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world.
Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.
The pretext for the prize was Mr Obamas decision to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples. Many people will point out that, while the President has indeed promised to reset relations with Russia and offer a fresh start to relations with the Muslim world, there is little so far to show for his fine words.
East-West relations are little better than they were six months ago, and any change is probably due largely to the global economic downturn; and Americas vaunted determination to re-engage with the Muslim world has failed to make any concrete progress towards ending the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
There is a further irony in offering a peace prize to a president whose principal preoccupation at the moment is when and how to expand the war in Afghanistan.

Its definitely a mockery
It’s been a joke for a long time...rmember Yassir Arafat getting his???
The Science prizes are still good anyway.
The One will be our first Global Leader. All the 6th graders told to sing his praise in 2009 will take to the streets in 2016 and demand it, along with “community activists”, “community leaders”, the UN, and the Global Warmers.
The Nobel committee is just getting on the bandwagon.
The NPP was already a mockery. This just embraced the silliness it has devolved into.
Since I consider the modern Nobel Peace Prize to be on the same level as a pro wrestling title belt, this award is double hookum...
No different than giving it to Carter or Arafat.
Its too late to make a mockery of it.
Carter.
Arafat.
Gore.
Obama.
I’m thinking its that droll scandinavian sense of humor.
Yassir, I remember.
“The pretext for the prize was Mr Obamas decision to ‘strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples’”
So basically, he won because he expressed an interest to sit down with outcast dictators without preconditions. Nevermind he’s all talk thus far. Let’s imagine the Iranian summit, repleat with bowing and hand-shaking, has already taken place. If the Nobel committee thinks this has anything to do with “Peace,” they don’t deserve to give out awards.
Hogwash. The man doesn't possess enough class for this to embarrass him.
Sorry, the Joker is incapable of embarrassment or shame.
NO Chit Sherlock Holmes.
The decision was disgraceful. Obama had a HUGE opportunity to turn it to his advantage—by REFUSING it. But not only did he accept it, but spent many agonizing minutes trying to explain all the things he was doing to deserve it. Even on Kos, half the folks are against this. If this doesn’t push his Gallup under 50%, then nothing will.
The truly absurd decision made by millions about Obama is that somehow he is the President. He is not. He is ineligible to hold the office.
It is the ignorance of that fact which is truly disturbing.
“No different than giving it to Carter or Arafat.”
It’s a little different. At least Carter stood in the corner while Sadat made his peace, and Arafat had been involved in various lies about wishing to cease hostilities. If Carter and Arafet had been awarded the prize when they were infants, perhaps, it would be no different.
