Strange disease affecting women breaks out in Zambia

A strange disease only affecting the joints of women and making them fail to stand on their own has been found in Zambia's Luapula Province, the Times of Zambia reported on Thursday.

The strange disease dubbed Dwarf has broken out in the Chembe area of the province and is only affecting women and girls, making them fail to stand on their own, Times said.

Teleshi Lwando, an employee at the local Lwela Health Center, told the visiting lawmaker from the area, Mwansa Mbulakulima, that the disease was not "very serious" and that patients were healing after three days.

He said the disease first broke out at Kabunda High School where a number of school girls had suffered from the disease.

All the affected people were just being given Panadol as a drug, Times said.

But the lawmaker said while the disease was not serious, there was need for health specialists to investigate why the disease was only affecting the girls and women.

"Yes, we have been told that this disease, Dwarf, is not so serious, but then we should not go to sleep because of the assurance, instead we should work hard to establish the truth about the disease," Mbulakulima told health workers.

Nothing odd about it. It’d called Obamoteoporosis.

Makes women weak in the knees and it is prevalent in Kenya as well as the greater continent

Might very well be “Kuru”, the shaking Sickness, that was mysteriously affecting women and girls in some areas of New Guniea some years ago. It was found out to be a retrovirus that was contracted by ceremonial cannibalism that was participated in only by females when a family member had died.

I know. Yuck.

And now, The rest of the story:

It is believed by some that the disease spread easily and rapidly in the Fore people due to their endocannibalistic funeral practices, in which relatives consumed the deceased to return the "life force" of the deceased to his hamlet, a Fore societal subunit.[7]
The dysmorphism evident in the infection rates—kuru was 8-9 times more prevalent in women and children than in men at its peak—is because while the men of the village took the choice cuts, the women and children would eat the rest of the body including the brain, where the prion particles were particularly concentrated.
There is also the strong possibility that it was passed on to women and children more easily because they took on the task of cleaning relatives after death and may have had open sores and cuts on their hands.[5]. Although ingestion itself of the prion particles would not lead to the disease, there was a high degree of transmission if the prion particles could reach the subcutaneous tissue.
With elimination of cannibalism because of Australian law enforcement and local Christian missionaries' efforts, Kuru rapidly declined among the Fore. However, the mean incubation period of the disease is 14 years and cases were reported with latencies of 40 years for those who were most genetically resilient.

About 25 years ago. That was my first thought, too.

Thanks, blam, for reminding me of the rest of the story. I had remembered this from a TV special many years ago, and so the “choicer” details were a little blurry. However, the story made such an impression upon me that the Zambia article brought it immediately to my mind!

Interesting that the Christian Missionaries were helpful in bringing this awful practice to an end. I am sure the “Multiculturalists” consider that to be an intrusion.

Not fair! Multiculturalism DEMANDS that we move some of these people here to America. Americans must prove they’re not RACISTS; the disease must be spread to as many white Americans as possible!
