Cobb policy: Law enforcement or racial profiling?
Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 10/12/2009 | Andria Simmons

Over the past two years, Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren has been referred to as a hero, a racist and a few other things unfit to print.

That’s because his department’s partnership with the Department of Homeland Security, which allows deputies to detain inmates suspected of being in the country illegally, has stirred the passions of immigration reform advocates as well as citizens who want current immigration laws enforced.

****

Since July 2007, 6,386 inmates suspected of being illegal immigrants have been detained for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to records provided by the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.

About of third of those inmates were jailed for traffic offenses such as driving without a license. Drunken driving was the next most common charge. Four murder suspects, 10 alleged rapists and 27 suspected child molesters were also among those detained for federal immigration officials.

...critics say the 287(g) program leads to racial profiling. They point to Cobb statistics showing that a third of the illegal immigrants in the jail were arrested for committing traffic violations as proof that the program is being misapplied. They say a program designed to rid the community of hardened criminals has been used to round up friends and neighbors.

“Criminals are fine; nobody wants criminals in their communities,” said the Rev. Tracy Blagec, spokeswoman for Atlantans Building Leadership for Empowerment. “Arrest the criminals, deport them, do what you need to do. But good people are being picked up, being separated from their families and having their businesses destroyed.”

Atlanta police Chief Richard Pennington worries that Cobb’s participation in 287(g) may harm the inroads his officers are trying to make in the Latino community...

It mystifies me that this program would be controversial.

The democrat party protecting its next great voting bloc. As the black vote was purchased long ago, illegals are now in the sights of the left.

Given the large Hispanic population in the metro Atlanta area, it stands to reason that many of them are here illegally, so what is the problem with checking up on these people when you catch them doing something(else)illegal?

Well, guess what? It's fairly effective, all things considered. It seems 44 percent of them self-deported! What's not to like?

The Government Office of Accountability issued a report in March about 287(g) after studying 29 of the participating law enforcement agencies. The report said that of the 43,000 undocumented inmates jailed in fiscal year 2008, ICE detained about 34,000. Of those detained, 41 percent began removal proceedings while 44 percent left the country voluntarily. The remaining 15 percent were either given humanitarian release, sent to a federal or state prison to serve a sentence for a felony conviction, or were released due to the minor nature of their offense and limited detention space.

Sir, you ran that red-light, may I see your drivers license.

The response then proves the subject has NO license, No insurance, none of his documents add up to anything American. This individual is here ILLEGALLY!!! It is NOT hard to determine this obvious fact.

These crybaby moron enablers are making it out as though ANYONE ethnically Spanish is being held over for the feds or hauled in for simple traffic stops. THIS IS A HUGE LIE!!

They have ZERO accounts to show for their accusations. Yet it goes straight into the press without being questioned. Please show me ONE single case of an American citizen with no warrants being hauled in over a traffic violation. ONE!! Just ONE, show me ONE!!!!!

A few years back the Commander of the Massachusetts State Police announced,on TV,that his department was severing all ties with the INS and would,in future, refuse to cooperate with the INS in any way.

So just because there is a large population of Hispanics then it "stands to reason" that many of them are illegal? Are you serious? Its stupid statements like that one that get us in trouble. There is a LARGE population of LEGAL Hispanics here. Since there is a large population of white people in Duluth MN does it stand to reason that many of them are Canadians?

There isn't a problem with "checking up on the ones who did something illegal" but there is a problem with keeping someone in jail for several weeks just to "see" if they are legal. Would you be ok with it if YOU were a citizen and held for several weeks because you MIGHT be illegal?

We have gone crazy over this immigration BS. It doesn't harm the country like everyone wants to say, it's just silliness.

Yes, but primary seatbelt laws that allow LEOs to arrest more young drivers on ancillary busts are just peachy (as long it is the white suburbanite kids)!

For demo-rats, this is simple: It is racial profiling if they arrest a left winger, it is law enforcement if they arrest a right winger.
