Amazing that the kid went to Annapolis with a mother like that. Her picture says a thousand words.

Great response to this article @ the Paper’s site:
‘So Susan, how do you come to terms with the decision your son made when he 1st chose to attend the Naval Academy and 2nd when he signed his 2 for 7 papers. I know my son made a very well researched decision and knew the consequences going in. It is tough as my son is an only child - but should he be killed while serving his country I could not blame a President or General for making the decision they made. Our Sons and Daughters are provided every opportunity to become informed about the military long before signing up. My son didn’t need the free education - he had that from many colleges without the obligation to serve anyone. He stated clearly to me that he could not live with himself if he didn’t serve. So while it is too bad that for many years a mother from my home state was saddened and angry because her son lost his life in WWII, she lived a long life in a wonderful country as a free woman - unlike the women in Afghanistan, shot for showing their face, before we arrived. This should be celebrated not that she wrote letters to the Des Moines Register because her son was killed in action or even friendly fire. It breaks my heart that anyone’s child is killed and for that reason I will continue to pray for those that are serving, going to serve and have served as well as for the leaders that make such difficult decisions as going to war. Mom of a 2009 USNA Grad’
