Thorbjorn Jagland: Obama’s Nobel ‘achievement’ was leaving Eastern Europe vulnerable to nuclear attack

October 13th, 2009

Dan Calabrese

And you thought President Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize without having done anything to earn it. Shows what you know.

Thorbjorn Jagland, long-time vice president of Socialist International and chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, came out in public today in an attempt to answer the question on everyone’s lips since Friday: “For what?”

One of the things Jagland mentioned specifically was Obama’s decision to welch on President Bush’s commitment to install missile shields in Poland and the Czech Republic – a complete sellout to the Russians that was offered without the Russians having to give anything in return.

This, according to Jagland, was a good thing.

But it gets better. Jagland’s further comment on this is priceless, and tells you everything you need to know about the way these people think:

“All these things have contributed to — I wouldn’t say a safer world — but a world with less tension.”

No one is safer. Not even Jagland would claim that. But there is “less tension,” so regardless of how dangerous things may be, we all just feel so darn much better about it, don’t we?

As the president himself might say, let’s be clear about why the Poles and the Czechs – and indeed, all of Eastern Europe – wanted those missile interceptors. One reason is the growing threat from a nuclear Iran, but another is the menacing stance of the Russians, who desperately want to bring Eastern Europe back under its sphere of influence.

The entry of Poland and the Czech Republic into NATO in the years since the fall of the Iron Curtain has not been a welcome development in Moscow. Boris Yeltsin may have seen Russia’s future as best aligned with the West, but Vladimir Putin certainly does not.

He is already putting the muscle on former Soviet republics wherever and however he can, and he would love to do the same to the former Warsaw Pact nations. What will stop him? Not missile defenses. Obama has seen to that, with Thorbjorn Jagland cheering him on.

Are we to believe that Obama will look into Putin’s eyes with steely resolve and declare that all of Eastern Europe is under America’s umbrella of protection? Why should we expect that? How has he stood up to the Russians thus far? On anything?

There is only “less tension” in the sense that the world’s biggest bullies are taking Obama’s lunch money without having to slap him around first. That may represent the momentary absence of conflict, but if that’s what these people think peace is, the Eastern Europeans might as well just start rebuilding the Berlin Wall and making room in their homes to quarter the Russian soldiers.

At least there’s no mistaking the priorities of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. Soviet socialism was grand, and thanks to our newest laureate’s decision not to protect its long-time victims, happy days for comrades may soon be here again.

And Russian Soviet blackmail.

Unless I am missing something, this doesn't match up time wise.

The Nobel decision was made on February 1st and Obama didn't announce the scrapping of the shield until September.

Feb 1 was the last day for nominations, not the day of voting for the prizes.

Wasn’t the Nobel decision made something like a week ago?

I kept hearing on Fox that the period of review was the first 12 days of his administration.

But, who knows.

according to alfred nobel’s wishes, the ‘period of review’ is supposed to be the nominees actions during the prior year. of course, the nobel committee does whatever they please.

Here's the essence of it: Thorbjorn Jagland, long-time vice president of Socialist International and chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee

There's a parallel thread on FR on the Wall Street Journal interview with another committee member who basically confirmed that the award was intended to influence American foreign policy, particularly nuclear policy. (sorry I can't trace the link at this time).

It keeps getting worse for the messiah.

Wonder what Poland is thinking right about now.

I just read an article on Yahoo where the Nobel committee was trying to justify their choice.

One quoted the commission of Alfred Nobel - the award is to go to the person who did the most to promote peace in the previous year. Obama was running for president in the previous year.

Another stated that though, admittedly, the world isn't "safer" because of his actions, there is "less tension".
Yeah, and there's "less tension" when the rape victim just lays there and takes it.

Dear Nobel Committee:

Not one to tell another country it's business, but now that you have a record of providing 'advice' through your strategic use of the Nobel Prize, here are a few things we Americans would like from your country:

> The full share of North Sea oil revenues paid to Norway.
>A letter from your country addressed to all US citizens, thanking us for saving you from Nazism during WWII.
Citizenship and all benefits thereof to Jimmy Carter and Albert Gore.
>Agreement from your government that any and all hostile actions directed toward the US first be directed at you (please send us address of your tallest building).
>A 100 feet by 100 feet flag written with the words, 'I will mind my own business,' across the entire surface in 2 inch lettering.
>A new school at your university that teaches the value of human liberty, instead of the value of the individual to the state

Thank you.
An American Citizen
