Russian birth rate at 15-year high

Its not that Russian's aren't giving birth to children, its just that the number of births is exceeding the number of deaths for the first time in fifteen years.

Russia's Health Ministry is taking credit for increase in birth rate, citing the economic stimulus program approved by the Kremlin as the reason why more mothers in Russia are giving birth and fewer people are dying.

But you can't argue with the numbers. On an annualized basis, Russia's birth rate is up between 7 and 8 percent. In August alone, 1000 more people were born than died.

According to UN, Russia's population has shrunk by 6.6 million people since 1993, and could lose 11 million more by 2025.

"What we are seeing today is a temporary fluctuation," said Igor Beloborodov, director of the Institute of Demographic Studies. "We can't define this as an improvement. The general situation in Russia and in Europe is really a demographic chasm."

Short-term financial measures aren't going to change that significantly, he said. "As society becomes more secularised, and as the family breaks apart, women keep having fewer children. Thirty per cent of babies are born out of wedlock, and up to 60 per cent of marriages fail."

The government has made raising the birthrate by at least 50 per cent a national priority, with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev drawing attention to demographic crisis. Measures since 2006 include larger maternity packages with paid maternity leave for up to 18 months, and full salary compensation for four months. The so-called "maternity capital" gives women who have a second child $10,000 for housing or education.

These measures have certainly had effect on the latest spike, but they won't solve the demographic chasm, said Sergei Zakharov, a demographics expert at the Higher School of Economics.

That's because it's not really about money.

Three things are missing from this article.

1. Herion use among Russian is up thanks to the drug trade from Afghanistan.

2. To fill the void of losing the "communist soul", many Russians are coverting to Islam.

And last:

http://www.wwrn.org/article.php?idd=23468&sec=33&con=42

Russia's overall population is dropping at a rate of 700,000 people a year, largely because of the short life spans and low birthrates of ethnic Russians. According to the CIA World Factbook, the national fertility rate is 1.28 children per woman, far below what is needed to maintain the country's population of nearly 143 million. The rate in Moscow is even lower, at 1.1 children per woman.

Russia's Muslims, however, are bucking that trend. The fertility rate for Tatars living in Moscow is six children per woman, Mr. Goble said, while the Chechen and Ingush communities are averaging 10 children per woman. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Muslims from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have been flocking to Russia in search of work.

Russia's Muslim population has increased by 40 percent since 1989, to about 25 million. By 2015, Muslims will make up a majority of Russia's conscript army and by 2020 one-fifth of the population.

"If nothing changes, in 30 years, people of Muslim descent will definitely outnumber ethnic Russians," Mr. Goble said.

For many Slavic Russians, the prospect of becoming a minority in their country is terrifying.

Russia within a few years will be ripe to fall to China and Iran.

Thats just wishful thinking and you know it. There is only about 6-7 million people in Russia that identify themselves as “muslims”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Russia
Compare that with the total population of 144 million.
Russia is improving in every possible way since Putin came to power.

If you are going to cite something at least get it right.

“...It is estimated that Russia is home to 23 million people of Muslim backgrounds, including 1.5 million in Moscow alone.”

Would you care to retract who was doing the wishful thinking?

Self identification by some unknown source or footnote in Wikipedia doesn’t cut it.

But if you want to play Wikipedia then play it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Russia

Islam is currently the second most widely professed religion in the Russian Federation. According to the most recent estimates by the R&F Agency, while there are 6 million genuine followers of Russian Orthodoxy in Russia, there are more than 20 million officially self-identified Muslims, a number that has risen by 40% in the last 15 years.[1]

And that statistic has a footnote.

When Russians convert to traditional Catholicism and start having large families and dump the astrology mixed in with the orthodox religion then you might see an increase.

http://russia.suite101.com/article.cfm/russias_muslim_population

The 2002 census found 14,5 million Muslims in Russia (around 10% of the population). However, in 2005, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Seigei Lavrov advanced the number of 20 millions. Others claim that Russia could have as much as 26 millions, including Azeri and Central Asian migrants. (See “The Shadow of Islam over Europe” by Aleksei Malashenko in the number 50, volume 5 issue of International Affairs.)

Not only important in numbers, the Muslim population of Russia is also very important historically. Islam arrived in Russia even before Christianity and it is only after long deliberations that Prince Vladimir of the Kievan Rus chose this second religion for his people in 987. After the conquests of Kazan and Astrakhan by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, Russia became a multi-ethnic

People of muslim background and people identifying themselves as muslims are two different things.

Self identification by some unknown source or footnote in Wikipedia doesn’t cut it.
It is not an unknown source, you should have read more carefully: "according to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 63% of respondents considered themselves Russian Orthodox, 6% of respondents considered themselves Muslim and less than 1% considered themselves either Buddhist, Catholic, Protestant or Jewish.[7]"

And did you really post these two links as authoritative references??

lol
You fail.

Ravil Gaynutdin, head of the Council of Muftis of Russia, announced that Russia's population of 144 million contains 23 million ethnic Muslims

Not a reliable, objective source. I have pointed you to a reliable source: Russian Public Opinion Research Center http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCIOM

Please spare me your nonsense. You are beginning to sound like MediaMatters.

http://mediamattersaction.org/emailchecker/200910020005

Next, the video claims that there are 23 million Muslims in Russia but this claim seems to be from a single source. According to the CIA, there are 140 million people in Russia and 10-15% are Muslim. That would mean that anywhere from 14 million to 21 million are Muslim. A small difference, but a difference nonetheless. Second, Muslims have lived in Russia for hundreds of years and many regions where Muslim majorities or significant Muslim minorities live was part of the Soviet Union.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/rs.html

From the CIA, a more reputable source than a Russian poll.

20 million and I am guessing it’s more since you have they skinheads beating up immigrants and Muslims like it was a game.

And it is fact that Muslim families have more children than Russian familes who are not from the Muslim faith.

In less than 5 years, Putin will be praying to Allah when the Iranians come knocking on his door with China looking over Iran’s shoulder.

It’s called Karma for Russia.

LOL? No it's not. You've done nothing to refute the only reputable, scientific source there is.
