US Pentagon scientist arrested for 'agreeing to be Israeli spy'
Jerusalem Post ^ | 10-19-09

Posted on 10/19/2009 3:51:46 PM PDT by SJackson

A scientist who worked for the US Defense Department, a White House space counsel and other agencies was arrested Monday on espionage charges.

Department said Stewart David Nozette, 52, of suburban Chevy Chase, Maryland, was charged in a criminal complaint with attempting to communicate, deliver and transmit classified information to an individual he believed to be an Israeli intelligence officer.

The complaint does not allege that the government of Israel or anyone acting on its behalf violated US law.

Nozette was arrested Monday by FBI agents. He is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court in Washington on Tuesday.

In an affidavit supporting the complaint that was unsealed Monday, FBI agent Leslie Martell said that on September 3, Nozette received a telephone call from an individual purporting to be an Israeli intelligence officer. The caller was an undercover FBI agent.

Nozette agreed to meet with the agent later that day at a hotel in Washington and in the subsequent meeting the two discussed Nozette's willingness to work for Israeli intelligence.

Nozette allegedly informed the agent that he had, in the past, held top security clearances and had access to US satellite information, the affidavit said.

Nozette also was alleged to have said he would be willing to answer questions about this information in exchange for money. The affidavit said the agent explained that the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, would arrange for a communication system so Nozette could pass on information in a post office box.

Nozette agreed to provide regular, continuing information and asked for an Israeli passport, the government alleged.

So, it’s okay for some countries to recruit Americans to spy on their own government and give away secrets?

I don’t stand with anyone who tries and convicts a man summarily.

That’s not what I fought for. That’s not what I fight for.

And you can’t “withdraw” a threat.

You are right, but money and sex are usually just the way they keep score, the ego and the arrogance are the main thing.

For the FBI to recruit Americans to spy on their own country, sure, that's how you catch them.

Good luck using that excuse in Court. I'm sure everybody will get a good laugh out of it.

His attorney can make that argument, but it's irrelevant, he's a traitor in the common rather than legal usage of the term. Hope he gets a great defense, and if guilty enjoys prison.

And if/when he is tried and convicted, I'll be cheering with the rest.

But I won't be part of a lynch mob.

Should also have noted I read a handful of other articles before posting this one, and they all seem to focus on his “agreement” to “spy”. If that’s all there is, you could well be right that there’s reason to go “hmmmmm”. I have to assume he did something, passed documents, received funds, some actual violation.

And Obama has plenty of people like you, but he’ll gladly take one more.

“If the accounts are true.”

Well, maybe. If they are true. I’ve always said that Jonathan Pollard belonged right where he is, in jail. But I’m not so sure about the new regime in Washington, and how far they can be trusted.

The FBI spent years framing the wrong guy for the anthrax mailings, because they didn’t want to investigate any of those nice Muslims who were probably responsible. And there have been other cases.

And we know that Janet Napolitano has her targets, and they are not Muslims, either. Jews, Christians, veterans, and conservatives are her preferred targets.

So, maybe this guy is guilty. Or maybe he is being framed for propaganda purposes. Probably it’s too early to be sure, one way or the other.

No disagreement, and dennisw may be correct that there were no actual acts of espionage here. As I noted in my last post no other articles mention them either. But it's hard to believe the FBI would arrest him with nothing more than an "agreement" to "spy". But possible.

Apparently for some, it's never too early for a lynching!

For whatever reason they targeted him, he bit, so it doesn't matter.

Yep. Not a smart move from an otherwise smart guy.

I found this video of him, answering a question from an AZ State student, about mini RF...

Stewart Nozette.

The question, what purposes? The Israel connection is a fabrication, per other articles he's not Jewish, per a previous post he's a Republican donor but so are lots of folk. I suspect there's more information coming.

Absolutely. If he's guilty, he deserves to spend life in jail.

But even if the story is accurate, it hardly compares to the harm Pollard did to our country, so to compare the two is either ignorant or dishonest, IMO.

Fair comments, but I doubt that the Evil Ones are working their schemes at the level of this investigations (Yet). I suspect that these guys were just out to catch traitors and the fish were biting. I’m willing to reserve final judgment until the trial is complete, but I’m ready to get on the short list for the firing squad.

I agree. It appears he was caught before doing any harm. If history is a guide, forget life, think a year or two at worst.
