A scientist who worked for the US Defense Department, a White House space counsel and other agencies was arrested Monday on espionage charges.
Department said Stewart David Nozette, 52, of suburban Chevy Chase, Maryland, was charged in a criminal complaint with attempting to communicate, deliver and transmit classified information to an individual he believed to be an Israeli intelligence officer.
The complaint does not allege that the government of Israel or anyone acting on its behalf violated US law.
Nozette was arrested Monday by FBI agents. He is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court in Washington on Tuesday.
In an affidavit supporting the complaint that was unsealed Monday, FBI agent Leslie Martell said that on September 3, Nozette received a telephone call from an individual purporting to be an Israeli intelligence officer. The caller was an undercover FBI agent.
Nozette agreed to meet with the agent later that day at a hotel in Washington and in the subsequent meeting the two discussed Nozette's willingness to work for Israeli intelligence.
Nozette allegedly informed the agent that he had, in the past, held top security clearances and had access to US satellite information, the affidavit said.
Nozette also was alleged to have said he would be willing to answer questions about this information in exchange for money. The affidavit said the agent explained that the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, would arrange for a communication system so Nozette could pass on information in a post office box.
Nozette agreed to provide regular, continuing information and asked for an Israeli passport, the government alleged.

Isn’t that entrapment?...No. Unless the FBI agent was asked “are you an FBI agent?” For instance, a bar owner sees what is obviously a drunk patron and the drunk asks for another drink. If he asks him are you a liquor agent and the guy says “No.” the bartender serves him, and then is thus arrested for selling to an obviously intoxicated person, he has a case of entrapment.

Also I believe that Israel probably feels that they need more info on things than we're giving because if the US Gov't fails to defend Israel then it's up to Israel to save itself. I know one thing: Israel isn't going to use the info they get, through spying, back on us. I'd rather have Israel spying on us than China-North Korea-Russia.

It was NOT an Israeli Agent he met with but an FBI Agent. The Israeli Government is not alleged to be involved in this.

It is generally understood that other countries have spies working in the United States. They are trying to get specific secret or top secret information about the US. The ChiComs do it aggressively. Russia does it aggressively. Israel in particularly aggressive and they share (for their own purposes) secret information with certain other countries.
A US citizen with a secret or higher clearance that will sell our nations technical secrets for money should be put where they will never again see the light of day. They are lower that whale dung and that is found at the bottom of the ocean. When such information in compromised, our overseas agents may be immediately killed or disappear never to be seen again. The US must take counter actions which cost millions of dollars and thousands of technical man hours of labor when such info gets into the wrong hands.
