Please consider donating: it's a *lot* harder to match blood types than it is to match for a marrow donation.
Cheers!
Well . . . it seems the NY Times is good for a few things still. I donate every year.
I think you have it backwards. Marrow matches are much more difficult.
A friend of mine, Bill Elkins, now retired, did a lot of the early research on bone marrow transplants for treating cancer. We sometimes sail together in the summer.
Out of curiosity, I just googled him and turned up some of his work:
I have Leukemia and will need a BMT at some point.
My Brother has a 25% chance of matching, even though he has a different Blood Type. We haven’t tested / typed him yet since I have been successful with Chemotherapy. After the end of a three year Remission, I just completed another cycle. So far, so good.
Odds are I will have to have a Non Related Donor which makes the entire BMT process a lot more complicated.
My oldest friend that I met when I was 12 yo died in July of lymphoma. She had the transplant but it didn’t work. 49 yo is too young to die. :(
What type of lymphoma does she have - I have Mantle Cell Lymphoma (currently incurable), but went through a hyper-agressive chemo regimen (M.D. Anderson protocol) followed by autologous stem cell transplant (my own stem cells).
5 years - no tumors, come December ...
Don’t ask me why - I should be dead ...
