Daley: City Managers To Take Nearly Five Weeks Off

Thousands Of City Workers To Take 24 Unpaid Days In 2010

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Faced with a $550 million budget deficit, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley on Monday said that all non-union city workers would take nearly five working weeks of unpaid leave next year to save the city money.

Daley announced plans Monday to save $114 million by requiring 3,600 non-union city workers to take 24 unpaid days off, eliminating 220 vacant jobs and cutting expenses like travel and supplies by $20 million.

oh well, now that his Olympic dream is over, it’s back to the nitty gritty of running his city. Certainly he can find savings in his budget of $550 million without breaking a sweat.

Why not reduce salaries by 10% and let everyone keep on working?

If a position can be left unmanned for 5 weeks - is the position needed?

Even better, he should do both.

“Why not reduce salaries by 10% and let everyone keep on working”

Tried that once, nothing but trouble, now is the time to trim the dead wood, and I bet there is plenty there.

20% of the people do 80% of the work, why penalize those folks?

How much did Chicago spend on their failed attempt to get the Olympics?

Paying for it on the backs of workers who had no say in anything.

More “leadership” from Illinois.

“First they came for the non-unions workers, but I didn’t speak up because I was living in Chicago and was already unemployed...”

Could we PLEASE just get this over with? Let us hit bottom so we can rebuild! It’s what we’re best at, anyway. It’s a lot easier to make money on the way UP.

Boy, if I ran this country...you’d all be in BIG trouble, LOL!

I've had management consultants try and tell me that.

It certainly doesn't hold true in industry.

maybe in civil service? I don't have any experience there

“It certainly doesn't hold true in industry.”

Yes it does, speaking as one who has run large manufacturing companies, owned a steel fabrication company, A Mortgage co, two film production companies, and a regional consulting co which worked in both the private and public sectors.

When you want to get something done ask a busy person.

I have tested over a thousand people on their management style. 15% of the people are task oriented and get things done, 15% of the people are Influencer's and BS a lot. and the balance are worker bees.

It is much more complicated, but the 80/20 rule works
