McDonnell, the Christian conservative
Politico ^ | 10/21/2009 | Ben Smith

Posted on 10/21/2009 7:38:12 PM PDT by markomalley

Virginia Democrats are highlighting this video of GOP gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell from a rally-the-base speech earlier today at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University in Lynchburg.

McDonnell's promise to be a champion for traditional marriage and anti-abortion stalwart comes on the morning following the final debate of the governor's race Tuesday night -- a debate where the Republican said that, if elected, his focus would be on issues such as jobs, transportation and energy.

Pressed about his opposition to abortion at the debate, McDonnell was far less expansive than in front of the evangelical students at Liberty.

And, it should be noted, the Republican's cultural message today has been notably absent from his just-a-suburban-dad TV ads in the Washington, D.C. market.

It is a really pitiful statement that an attack would highlight somebody's status as a Christian.

Pitiful but typical from Ben Smith at Politico

If only he was a Muslim. I hear those people are peace-loving defenders of gays and women. And Jews too. They love them some Jews.

The worst McDonnell can do is run from it. He should embrace being a Christian and a pro-lifer.

I think the days of Republicans apologizing for their beliefs are over.

A true Christian would never denounce their belief. I do believe scripture covers that.

The last, pathetic, punch-drunk flailings of the liberal elite... It’s all they have now.

McDonnell has run about the best campaign I’ve ever seen from a GOPer. It should be emulated throughout the land. He has very effectively stayed on message and refused to apologize for his stances. Surely, we should take nothing for granted until all the votes are counted, but McDonnell has been masterful the whole way.

I hope you’re correct. The layoffs in Richmond must be bad. The assholes in Norfolk could probably care less. VA needs to take her state back.

ABC 13 - Update: Liberty University Cancels Classes for Voting

Lynchburg, VA - The conservative voting block that is Liberty University has announced it will again showcase its political power on Election Day.

The school has decided to cancel all classes on November 3rd, so students can make it to the polls.

LU will even run buses to the polling places to make the trip easier on the student body.

In the 2008 election, Liberty students came out by the thousands and made a difference. Barack Obama lost the city of Lynchburg, and most believe, it was due to the organized efforts of LU to get students out for John McCain .

This year, a similar turnout could be trouble for Incumbent Democratic Delegate Shannon Valentine. Lynchburg registrar Pat Bower reported that more than 1,700 Liberty students on campus completed applications by last week’s deadline. As many as 3,200 Liberty students who live on campus are eligible to vote in Lynchburg. Bower says her office can’t track off-campus registrants.

Conventional wisdom says these students mainly vote Republican.

“The layoffs in Richmond must be bad.”

My first real job was with Reynolds Metals in Richmond. At the time, it was a great place to live.

Oh I totally agree. The best campaign in a long time.

Plus, he stayed on message that he will be a "jobs governor" - reminding everyone that its democraps who have run the economy and state budget into the ground.

This is Politico, expect the bias.

Bob is not running from anything. However, he’s made it clear that this campaign is about jobs, the economy and transportation.

And poll, after poll, after poll have shown that’s what concerns voters most. That’s why the thesis attack didn’t work.

He’s not betraying any values. But it’s not what the voters are looking for.

McDonnell is perhaps the most cogent politician that I have witnessed on the national stage since Ronald Reagan.

Steadfast, clear & convincing.

POLITICO is a web iteration of a bunch of Newsweek & Time has-beens. Lamestreamer PC-oids one and all.

Only a sick society would see defending the life of the unborn as something to be ashamed of.
