GRAND RAPIDS -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm told Kent County educators Friday the state's school financing system "clearly is not working" and said lawmakers must agree to both a short-term fix as well as long-term changes by the end of the year.

But the gathering of superintendents and school board members also gave Granholm an earful, especially after she said lawmakers are "battle weary."

"If elected people are weary, my level of sympathy for them is zilch," Catherine Mueller, Grand Rapids school board president, told Granholm. "They ran for these jobs and put themselves in this situation."

Granholm appeared before educators across the state Friday, a day after announcing public schools could face a $127-per-student cut in state aid on top of the $165-per-head cut already announced.

Can’t we still blame it all on Bush?

I thought that was the Michigan way for Democrats.

What you mean that giving “education” 3/4 of stimulus money spent to date isn’t working?

I’m shocked I tell ya.

As long as the National Education Association, and the Department Of Education are involved, public education will never be anything but a disgrace.

The people of Michigan voted for the governor and the people in the legislature...and the members of the school boards. They got what they wanted...and less!

And you see how Grandholm is dealing with it. She’s going to cut the amount of money spent per student in an attempt to force people to vote for higher taxes.

Meanwhile we have the highest paid teachers in the nation.

In Michigan, as in ALL other states just look at the percentage of Administrative staff to actual Teaching staff. They are loaded with paper pushing Non-producers sucking up valuable financial resources.

Don’t know the numbers today, but 5 years ago Michigan had the 4th highest AVERAGE teacher salaries....

California $57k
New York $54k
somewhere else in New England $53k
Michigan $52K

Michigan also has very generous benefit packages.... in a local (rural) district this cost about $17k per year (on top of their salary).

If you look at cost of living in Michigan versus the states that paid more - Michigan was definitely the highest paying....

Just look what a foreigner (Nova Socia) can do. And she has more paid assistants and her 9 trips to Japan with her entourage netted a handful of reported jobs. I think they’re all crooked.

No kidding. Granholm has been whining, and pointing fingers all week. The state has lost well over 2million jobs, and those working in the private sector that are still working have been taking pay & benefit cuts just to keep their jobs. This gutless b$txh would never consider asking the unions to take a cut “for the children”. Man up Jenny :(

They ought to set salary caps in public education and cut the salaries of administration.

Then reform the benefits including the pensions.
