KNOXVILLE — The case against the alleged leader in the torture slaying of a young Knoxville couple went to the jury Tuesday with the defense trying to poke holes in a mountain of circumstantial evidence.
Lemaricus Davidson, 28, faced 38 counts including kidnapping, theft, rape and murder in the January 2007 carjacking deaths of University of Tennessee student Channon Christian, 21, and her boyfriend Christopher Newsom, 23. The counts were consolidated from an original 46.
The state intends to seek the death penalty if he is convicted. The case has touched a racial nerve because the defendants are black and the victims were white.
Davidson's lawyer David Eldridge acknowledged in closing arguments that his client was a drug dealer, that he lied to police after his arrest and that he had sex with Christian.
Eldridge suggested the clean-cut couple may have come to Davidson to buy drugs, while prosecutors say they were random victims ambushed by gun-wielding men in an apartment parking lot while on a date.

He certainly will be convicted, there is absolutely no doubt he committed the crime. An absolute horror that it has taken several years to get it to a jury.
Unfortunately hate crime laws are for whitey only, just a tool of the federal mafia to put more whites in prison for longer prison terms. It’s clearly racist legislation that makes one person more guilty than another via his/ her race.
Being that I hate the bastards that committed this crime, here’s what I suggest be done to them. Tie them to a stake in public, and burn them to death with a small but ever growing pile of hot coals placed beneath the feet so that every inch of their body is ever so slowly consumed to the point of ashes over a period of a couple of days. I think that these hateful bastards deserve a taste of Hell.
They raped her orally and vaginally, and sodomized her, for two days before she suffocated with plastic bags over her head in a trash can in their house, while they played video games.
Just horrific. Such clean-looking kids, too. I can’t stand thug-culture.
I have friends in Blaine (very well educated, very thoughtful people). They are and have been angry over this case from the beginning. It wasn’t just rape and killing, it was torture and it was brutal.
If the DA doesn’t manage this case well, there will be a lot of people that lose faith in the system. The black men who committed this crime are less than animals and have been given a break by the system over and over again.
Even if convicted and given death, they get another 20 years minimum in appeals. A rope and tree are appropriate in this case.
This was a horrible horrible murder. I have never read anything like it before.
They had better convict and put all of them away for the rest of their lives. Or wait until Channon’s father has passed.
That man is red hot ready to explode, especially when the animals suggested how his daughter wanted what she got.
