The "hate crimes" bill approved recently by Congress could be a problem for broadcasters -- most importantly, Christian broadcasters -- now that it has been signed into law.

President Barack Obama has signed into law a measure that adds to the list of federal hate crimes attacks on people based on their sexual orientation. Congress approved the legislation last week as part of the $680-billion FY 2010 Defense Authorization bill. Appended to the hate crimes amendment was a statement ensuring that a religious leader or any other person cannot be prosecuted on the bases if his or her speech, beliefs, or association.

There will be a lot of happy people to see priests and ministers being frogmarched out of their churches in handcuffs.

Is there such a thing as MORE justice for any special gender, race, religion or sexual orientation? Isn’t the government itself promoting racism, class distinction, when ONE group is favored with benefits, handicap points in the game of life, and penalties for those who don’t recognize quotas. Indian Americans get casion rights, Hispanic wants ‘their’ language, and older citizens their discounts, and preachers a clergy discount, and farmers want subsidies. When is there going to be a gov’t that recognizes LIBERTY AND JUSTICE for all?

Funny, what’s the difference between a “hate crime” and “crime”?

a religious leader or any other person cannot be prosecuted on the bases

So if he's standing on second base while giving his sermon he cannot be prosecuted?

WTH?

That actually needs to happen.

Priests and ministers need to be unintimidated by this, and openly defy this intimidation attempt.

People will NOT put up with it.

Here’s an idea:

Don’t attack PEOPLE “based on their sexual orientation.”

Simply explain why sodomy is a sin, why it causes disease, why it leads to early death, etc.

The queers should be afraid of what’s going to happen to them when one day the muzzies will be enforcing sharia law led by the head muzzie in the WH.

The leftists will find a way to interpret even that as a “hate crime”.

I know this is an outdated question, but whre does the federal government get the authority to outlaw “hate”? Does it only apply to crimes that go across state lines, or is it one of those “guideline” things, where states adopt it voluntarily?

By the way, did anyone involved in the debate bring up the fact that, traditionally speaking, motive is not an element of crime? Did Congressional/White House politicians wonder what could come of continuing to upturn our legal heritage? Or did they just want to look compassionate?

Point is...don’t you have to HATE to commit any type of crime?

This is an obvious attack against the 1A...Nothing else!

“Point is...don’t you have to HATE to commit any type of crime?”

Didn’t Othello claim he was tricked into murder because he was “one that loved not wisely, but too well”? Hate isn’t the only dangerous passion. Love is often as bad.
