An early blast of winter walloped some western states with deep snow and slowly pushed into Nebraska and Kansas Thursday, bringing blizzard conditions to the eastern plains and causing treacherous roads, closed schools and hundreds of canceled flights.
The fall storm spread 3 feet of snow and left much higher drifts across parts of northern Utah, Wyoming and Colorado, before its leading edge hit neighboring states just to the east.
Wind-driven snow built to blizzard conditions over much of eastern Colorado. The weather service warned most area roads would be impassible Thursday night because of blowing snow and near-zero visibility.
The heaviest October snowfall in the Denver area in a decade forced the closure of hundreds of schools and businesses. Roads across the region remained snowpacked and icy.
"Big storms like these, they seem to come around every 10 to 12 years," said Kyle Fredin, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Paging Mr. Gore, paging Mr. Gore...please report to the
ice-encrusted front desk.....Mr. Gore....
There are blizzard warnings out for today for parts of Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas.
All these idiots who try to claim a cold snap is part of “Climate Change” need to be reminded: that part of it isn’t supposed to happen until the Gulf Stream shuts down due to the complete melting of arctic ice flooding the North Atlantic with fresh water, which hasn’t happened yet.
My wife has a connection flight to Denver this afternoon. Does anyone know if the airport is open?
Hey Algore! They’re called “seasons”! In many parts of the world, there’s four of them.
Thanks for the info.
As of 4:00am MT it is...check here for updates: http://www.flydenver.com/
That’s why they are calling it “Climate Change” now, instead of global warming.
Ya know my only concern was earlier, when the Colorado Rockies were in the post season and the first game of their NLDS at home was cancelled for snow....
Take note Minnesota...with your new outdoor stadium....you may be playing your home playoff games at the Orange Bowl or something.....
LOL! Are they protesting “Irony”? ; )
Meanwhile, Loveland and A-Basin ski resorts here in CO opened a couple of weeks ago. At least in Loveland's case - the earliest opening in 40 years.
Global warming, what a crock. Almost as funny as saying "obama economic policy" or "obama foreign relations"...
That photo speaks volumes about the global warming loons.
We are the dumbest people on the planet.
Airport will be fine this afternoon. It was open through the storm, although quite a few flights were cancelled. It cleared out by midnight or so last night, plenty of time to clear runways, etc...
sitting here with over 2 feet of global warming in my driveway....
ALgore is an idiot.
Unless he strictly means in the Autumn (in which case he should have spcified), that's BUNK.
I was living in Higlands Ranch, CO in March 2003 when we had 3.5 feet at my house with 5 ft drifts.
And it happened again just a couple of years ago after I moved away.
