KABUL President Hamid Karzai's challenger withdrew Sunday from next weekend's runoff election, effectively handing the incumbent a victory but raising doubts about the government's credibility at a time when the U.S. is seeking an effective partner in the war against the Taliban.

I wonder if Jarret will want Abdullah’s endorsement for Owens.
Did he endorse Owens in the NY23 race?
People generally have not been mentioning the Russians, who BTW have been eye balling the US weakening role in Afghnistan.
Obama wants to fiddle with Karzai? Well Obama is out of his league. Karzai and Putin will take him to the wood shed, and Afghanistan will the fall under Russias hegemony, alonog with Iran. p> Russias offer to provide helicopters to the Afghani government is only the tip of an iceberg. The Russians are now very active in Afghanistan, and they may have Abdhulla,and/or Karzai already in their camp. Meanwhile Obama ......dithers.
And next Obama will have some jerked off strategic plan that is ridiculous, a recipe for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Mind Putin! Just watch what the Russians do if Obama starts playing the black power "let them eat cake," holier than thou, community organizing card in Afghanistan. The Russians will become Afghanistans newest ally, while Americas influence fades in its weakness brought on my the so called magic one.
This is looking so much like a repeat of Vietnam that I cannot believe our “Supreme” leader is such a dunce.
You nailed that one!! That is exactly what will happen.
Obama needs to be tried for treason.
Things started to go downhill in Vietnam after JFK gave the order to assassinate Diem. I don’t think Obama will order Karzai assassinated, but if he quarrels with him and insults him, as he has already done, he certainly isn’t improving his chances of winning.
I don’t think we have an ally anywhere on the planet whose leaders Obama hasn’t insulted, in one way or another. And this is what he calls reaching out for popularity.
It’s currently illegal for the US to assassinate foreign leaders.
I think your scenario is very plausible. However, I also believe there are other calculations involved.
The Obama regime has worked hard to paint Karzai as “Bush’s stooge” in the perceptions of the Afghanis in order to replace him with Abdullah. However, Abdullah is also smart enough to realize that if he goes along with this the Afghanis will just consider him as “Obama’s stooge”.
Since Karzai, Abdullah and everyone else in Afghanistan now know that the US is going to bail a la Vietnam, no matter which one of them wound up as President, when the SHTF they’d just be “America’s stooge”. Abdullah has probably figured his chances are better with the Afghan people if he doesn’t play Obama’s game, while Karzai will be desperately looking for a stronger backer (Russia) for protection when Obama betrays him.
These people understand and have been playing the Great Game a hell of a lot longer than the idiots who are in charge of America right now.
I would reply that Obama isn’t big on the rule of law, and might try to do it covertly. But I don’t think the CIA likes him very much at this point, so covert might be a bit hard for him. Not to mention embarrassing.
The Kennedy assassination order became public, ironically, when the NY Times printed the Pentagon Papers. They were widely taken, as the Times intended, as showing up Nixon. I don’t think many people actually read them; they just took the press’s word for it. But in a passage that the MSM pretty much forgot to mention, they confirm that Kennedy gave the assassination order. And of course a few historians have since confirmed it.
Forgot to comment on this. You are correct about Karzai - I'm familiar with his history. I'm sure he's also remembering right about now how America treated a former loyal Afghan ally, Ahmad Shah Massood.
I doubt the Russians care much about shutting down the poppy/heroin trade. Afghans still have to eat so I suspect they will gravitate to whoever will let them grow the poppies.
Quote by Massoud:
“Are there any brave men left in Washington? Or are they all cowards?”
Massoud tried to warn the CIA about Gulbuddin Hekmatyar 20 years ago - pleaded with them to take him out. They wouldn’t listen. They stiffed Massoud and funded and armed Hekmatyar. Now he’s one of our principal adversaries in Afghanistan.
Yeah. The CIA was so ridiculous that some people joked that the Soviets had put something in the paint in the building walls that made people go crazy. Massoud was killed 2 days before 9/11 I believe.
This is sickening . WE PAID YOUR MONEY(MILLIONS) to get him to drop out after we demanded a new election because Karzai is a drug lord cheater!! You can’t make this up!!! Get the hell out of there. NO MORE NATION BUILDING!!!!!Close the Mexican borders!!
“NO MORE NATION BUILDING!!!!!Close the Mexican borders!!”
Exactly!
