California House Seat Tilts to Democrat

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- John Garamendi, California's lieutenant governor and the favorite to win one of the two open U.S. House seats Tuesday, has been well known for decades as one of Sacramento's relentless promoters of liberal issues.

California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi campaigns for an open U.S. House seat Saturday outside San Francisco.

Now, the man who always wanted to be governor of California vows to be a team player on the national stage if he wins a special election in a heavily Democratic district outside San Francisco. Absent a major upset, Mr. Garamendi will be sworn in to office by Thursday, in time for him to cast a "yea" vote for the health-care overhaul plan and finally become a figure on the national stage.

I gave the equivalent of a evening out with my wife to support Harmer against this jerk.

I want Harmer to surprise everyone.

Those people out there can’t help themselves. They will vote for a goat if the ballot says “Goat (D)”. Some people are beyond common sense and don’t care that they are not only screwing themselves, but everyone else as well.

You never know, Harmer might pull off an upset. There were Tea Partiers in SF recently, and enough libs might stay home to give Harmer the victory.

Actually wish the Dems would run Goats for office. Sure would be a heck of a lot better for the country.

/facepalm That's the problem. We need to have more goats running for office in CA. They sure wouldn't do as much damage as the Ds in there now.

My big hope is that Virginia, New Jersey and NY-23 fall the right way and convincingly early in the evening. That might depress Dem turn out at the last hour in California and let us squeak out a surprise win.

Wasn’t he a former CA Dept of Insurance head? I think I remember that when I was an insurance agent in California. Anyway, I remember the insurance agents liked him.

I haven't seen any polls on this election. Everyone is relying on the Dem-Rep split in registration.

Still, I admit that this district has changed since reapportionment. I still don't understand why a district with a nuclear lab and an air force base would vote Democrat. It must be the people who live near the office parks.

I’m in this district (and have seen lots of Harmer signs and enthusiasm). But it’s getting more liberal every year; it’s just cool to be liberal here because it is soooo “Bay Area” and people love being “green” (even the Livermore Lab claims to be “green”) and no one goes to church. And people are rich enough that higher taxes don’t faze them and they love to help the “community” by taxing themselves.

That’s it in a nutshell. Plus more Latinos by the day.

Still, hoping for an upset. Two Harmer votes for this household.

I've lived in and out of the district for 25 years (I'm in the CA-11 now, due to redistricting). Harmer lives in the part of San Ramon that stayed in the CA-10.

I was in Livermore this morning and saw a bunch of Garamendi signs on the roads.

Looks like part of the district runs through the Berkeley/Richmond axis--solid DemonRat territory. A district map can be found here:

[I took the liberty of making the link clickable.]

Most of it doesn't run through that axis--Berkeley's still Barbara Lee, Richmond's still George Miller.

But the 10th district does grab the city of El Cerrito (where I lived long ago, before redistricting made the map what it is now) and the unincorporated town of Kensington. They make up the westernmost green pocket (and have a total population of maybe 30,000 at most).

It's not joined by road to the rest of the district. (The area immediately east of El Cerrito is hilly parkland, and the only roads through the park area begin a little to the south.)

There's some electoral reasoning for having this little pocket of the district there, but I wouldn't know it.

guess I’m distressed with FRs because I’m a political junkie and want to pick up on races that are going around the country relying on the FR site to do so.

I’m very concerned with this bunch of commies now in control and want to do my bit to get the word out.
At the time I read your posting there were 15 previous postings and not one mentioned that this is the California 10th district, as you did, let alone post a link to the conservative candidate’s website.

This happens far too often with FR postings. They have a candidate in their district they want to let folks know about.
But because they know about these candidates think everybody else does and leave out pertinent information.
and don’t include it.
They, might mention the name perhaps the opponents and the party’s identification
But;

Don’t post their district
Don’t post their link
Don’t post the election date

Now this is a race from what I understand thats been over shadowed by the NY 23rd, VA and NJ. The only nationally syndicated talkie that’s even referenced it, once, has been Savage who’s based on the left coast.

If conservative activists want to push their candidate they also should remember to post an article because of FR’s cycling, frequently even if they have to rewrite it so the thread develops.
