I have a completely opposite take on this: IMO, buying a railroad makes me think Buffett sees an impending all-out economic collapse and deep decade-long depression. In such a case, I’d think a hard physical asset with property rights-of-way that is also a form of economical, basic transportation for good and people would be one the safest bets to make.

Buffet is preparing for TEOTWAWKI.

Is Warren Buffet going to be offering jobs (in the full economic meaning of "gainfully employed") such that the true unemployement rate will drop from it's current 17%-19% back down to 5.5%?

Without jobs...real jobs...there will be and can be no economic recovery!

Yes...it really is that simple.

Or maybe the fix is in for some sort of rail subsidy. I hear a lot of talk about high speed rail. Maybe that makes their right-of-way more valuable.

Or maybe they’ll administer the plan.

Of course we don’t know. But given his political connections, he probably does.

And I used to think he was one of the good guys... :(

You could cerainly be right. But one thing is for sure, the corrupt MSM have been working overtime to spin this in support of Obama’s economy, you know, the one Obama keeps saying is Bush’s.

"Buffet is now a real picker of winners. Like he picked hussein obama"

...after he picked Her Thighness.

John Templeton was another spectacular investor who lost it in his later years.

Buffett's idea -- buy a railroad because transport will come back in an economic recovery has always worked before. Unless, of course, it's different this time.

BNSF has been pulling out of area’s of the country long before the Obama economy collapsed in a heap. They don’t even make stops in Montana anymore, and they gave up serving the American agriculture industry.

Right. Buffet is looking out for numero uno. That's been proven time and time again. He's not much of a risk taker. The people who end up hurting the most in an economic disaster are the careles people.

To be profitable, the RR needs goods to ship, fuel to be reasonable priced and labor to be reasonably negotiated.

One of the main materials shipped by rail is coal; is he thinking Barama is going to lose on bankrupting coal power plants? The fuel for locomotives would also remain reasonable if Cap and Trade is defeated, and domestic oil production increases. And labor, despite what the UAW is doing to Ford, is not going to be especially bold while the recovery remains slow.

Calling a bottom?

The bottom was at about Dow 6600.

We’ve since touched 10,000 and now are at about 9700.

Hardly a bottom call.

But, if Buffet is tied into the Obama administration how does that not make him a liar? And if he’s a liar, how can one know he’s not lying about this?
