Mr. Owens gained

complete union support

after Ms. Scozzafava stopped campaigning and endorsed him. Unions claim about 110,000 members in the district.

But it DIDNT go to a socialist republican!

THAT was OUR battle and THAT was our WIN. To beat the marxists in the Dem party we first have to crush the socialists in the GOP. Its a shame Doug didn’t pull out the win for the icing on the cake but in the end we achieved what we set out to achieve and more... The mask was ripped from the scuzzy GOP candidate and revealed to be exactly what we said... A Democrat and a socialist.

The GOP WILL be purged of socialists!

I said this in the last election cycle, and I haven’t changed my mind that the RNC and NRCC should never dump big bucks in a special election.

I think the rules should be changed to state that the only elections they are required to support the candidate are ones that candidates are elected in a primary and only then if they adhere to the rules of the Republican party.

This idea to dump big bucks into a CD that went big time for obama was a calculated risk and it failed. Save the money and get behind the primary candidate. Last night I heard complaints that Hoffman was on Hannity with the Thompsons and sat there like a bump on a log between them.

Hoffman had no experience in politics and in the end you needed one of the other conservatives that were dissed for Dede’s who had experience in the distict. You don’t have to have been a candidate but you sure had better have worked races and understand what you are doing.

It was a miracle he came that close and most importantly that district sent a message that liberal Republicans will not be their candidate. Would bet some people didn’t vote because they were fed up with the election and when she dropped out of the race and endorsed the Dem, things went south. I would bet they would have gone more south if she had stayed in the race.

No compromise.

The socialists MUST be purged from the GOP.

This sucks, but I am excited that the vote was so close for somebody that ran on a non-mainstream ticket. That by itself is historic, and my hats are off for Hoffman.
On the bright side, the election is next year, so the person in the seat will only serve for a bit anyway. Ultimately, one vote isn’t a bit deal in the House (would be in the Senate).

Big night overall for the GOP.

You fought a noble battle and came very close in a very short period of time, Mr. Hoffman.

You proved that you COULD HAVE WON, and that the big gun leftists are AFRAID of the Tea Parties, and the American people, as well they should be.

Obama lost BIG time last night, and you Mr Hoffman were part of the VICTORY of the people over the overreaching corruption of the Obama government.

Republican "leadership".....take note. It is YOU who lost in NY23 last night, not Doug Hoffman. NO MORE DEMOCRATS posing as Republicans, anywhere, any time. NO MORE.

do we have the list of GOP leaders in NY23?

We need to diseminate that list so the people in NY23 can demand their resignation.

The socialists MUST be purged from the GOP.

Agreed. As long as we're not putting one MARXIST in congress for every ONE SOCIALIST we remove from the GOP.

“But for an unknown, and no backing by the RNC, he did great!”

For an unknown, with no backing by the RNC, with absolutely no charisma or presence, he did great!

This guys brain is on a 5 second time delay.

The GOP should find someone BETTER than either Hoffman (who they passed on) or Scuzzyfuzzy (WTH?) to run next year.

Franken put up a fight for at least about six months or so, didn’t he?

I wish he wouldn’t have conceded so early.

But his rise from obscurity from the time scuzzy dropped out was phenomenal! The Palin endorsement must have helped tremendously. All these people that the GOP elite knifes in the back are bound to unite and whup their collective asses.

I have a little bit of hope after hearing last night’s returns.

Are they really saying that?

Yes. I heard Beckel on Fox last night among many others that were making the case that Corzine had no chance because of the down economy. But because O showed up, Corzine ended up a lot closer than he could have been.

I'm going to channel Ray Malone here (FReeper Common Tator, now in heaven):

The majority of the electorate is made up of RINOs and DINOs, in most places.

For a conservative to win (let's stipulate that the poll showing that 40% of the voters are conservative is correct), the conservative has to get 11% more votes from RINOs or DINOs, or both. We can stipulate that the conservative will get zero votes from self-identified "liberals".

A nominee who is running on an anti-RINO jihad, like Hoffman, is going to be unappealing to RINOs. Getting visible support from Our Lady of Wasilla can't increase his conservative vote, because he's got them all already.

So, for a RINO-killing conservative to win a statewide race, or to win a local race other than in Jesusland, he has to win with votes from DINOs.

The reasons why DINOs vote for communists over and over again are complicated. In my little corner of the world, my DINO neighbors hate Republicans more than they hate RATS, it's that simple. Our local Republican gentry are the social and economic enemies of our local DINOs. The local Republicans want the DINOs to clean up their property, stop smoking and drinking cheap liquor, and want their children to be well-scrubbed and polite.

This is a kulturkampf which may be going on all over the country.

Anyway, the Republicans held NY-23 for 100 years with a trucon+RINO coalition, the trucons blew off the RINOs, didn't appeal to DINOs, and lost the seat.

Ray, if you're reading FR up there, I hope I did you justice. I'll ping you just in case that works in Heaven.

Glenn Beck laid it on the line to the GOP this morning on the radio.

He said, clearly and unmistakeably, that if the GOP run people like Dede anywhere and everywhere, they WILL face competition from people like the Doug Hoffmans in America, and they WILL either be defeated or forced to spend huge sums of money, and also face defeat at Democrat hands because the people they need to vote for them against the Dem WILL NOT do so.

It was a promise, not a threat.

They’ve got nowhere to go now, to escape this day of reckoning.

The distinction is between marxist and socialist is pointless... Its the choice between death by firing squad or by hanging, either way the outcome is the same.

Our ONLY hope is to shape the GOP into a force within the states that is entirely committed to freeing the people and states who still want to be free from the marxists and the idiots who vote for them. To do this the GOP needs to be 100% committed to getting folks elected to office in the states that will have the same level of commitment to the cause and will actively move the state into opposition against the usurpations of the marxists, fedgov and the idiots who vote marxists and socialists into office.

Deluding the commitment of the party by compromising with socialists for negligible gains in states that are hopelessly lost for the foreseeable future does more than simply delude the effort of restoring freedom, it actively works against the cause.

The cause of restoring freedom to the people who still want it is what drives us. Single minded devotion to that cause is what is going to free us from the chains of marxism. Anything else is unacceptable... We do not want lighter chains! We want NO chains! and unfortunately, what the years and decades have taught us is that “incremental” approach to freedom means never achieving it.

I miss Ray! But ya done good, Jim!

However, this is one area where Ray and I strongly disagreed (one of the few areas, I might add). It showed up when I worked for Blackwell, and he supported the party man, Jim Petro.

He was right about losing the Governorship, but I worked for the right man, and am proud of it.

Hoffman's run and narrow loss is going to lead to some soul-searching in at least SOME of the Republican leadership. They all know that, had they chosen a more conservative candidate in NY23, we would have a Republican in that seat. As it stands, even the Democrat is more conservative than this pseudo-Republican the party forces chose.

In the long run, this will prove to be a victory for the American people.
