Left Lashes Out at ‘V’, Obama-Friendly ABC Purges Showrunner
BigHollywood.com ^ | November 5, 2009 | by James Hudnall

Last night a brave and insightful documentary was aired that accurately portrayed the wave of ObamaMania that swept the nation. It was called “V” and aired on ABC to mostly rave reviews and tremendous ratings.

There was another documentary about the Obama campaign on HBO, but that left out a lot of relevant facts, so spaceships and lizard-people aside, ABC wins the veracity award.

The parable is, an attractive group of aliens show up, out of the blue, and offer universal health care, advanced technology and world peace in exchange for our trust and devotion. All we have to do is believe everything they say without question. Which means, don’t ask anything about their hidden motives or past associations because that would be racist impolite. In fact, one reporter who is offered an exclusive interview with their leader is admonished not to say anything negative or they would be denied access (Hi, Fox!).

SNIP

This is not just a right-wing worldview but the worldview of the paranoid Tea Party movement. I’m really not sure how this made it onto network television. Maybe the calculation is that Glenn Beck will start urging his viewers to watch and a ratings bonanza will ensue. (I don’t expect scientists will be the scapegoats in the new series, as the original “V” alien campaign to tar scientists as a fifth column sits uncomfortably close to the current right-wing view that the world’s leading scientific organizations are conspiring to suppress evidence that global warming is a hoax.)

Naturally, when a show debuts to huge ratings and mostly great reviews, the producer’s career is golden. Not this time.

SNIP

One thing’s certain, I doubt the “V” would find too many people in this administration very appetizing.

The amusing thing is that it makes complete sense for aliens that plan to use humans as food to offer universal health care. In the Twilite Zone episode that I think was named "To Serve Man" they fed the guy while he was being transported. The cattle need to be kept fat'n happy!

BTW - I recognised a song by Muse from the V trailer I saw on line. It would make a good tea party anthem. Here are the Lyrics. They are good but the song kicks keister. Check it out.

"Uprising"

Paranoia is in bloom,
The PR transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down
And hope that we will never see the truth around
(So come on)

Another promise, another seed
Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed
And all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined
(So come on)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution takes its toll
If you could flick the switch and open your third eye
You'd see that we should never be afraid to die
(So come on)

Rise up and take the power back
It's time the fat cats had a heart attack
They know that their time's coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend
(So come on)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

The parallels to the Obama administration are strong indeed, but I could be persuaded to believe that the makers of the show didn’t intend it as a swipe at Obama (maybe!). Imagine if you knew nothing about Obama, but wanted to make a fictional television show about a charismatic leader who led America on a descent into fascism. It would be very difficult to do so without portraying a lot of similarities to Obama’s totalitarian tendencies and his cult-like following of adoring, starry-eyed millions.

As JJ noted, your point is well-stated and perfectly plausible, especially if you factor in that the (demoted, fired) creator Scott Peters stated explicitly way back when planning began on the show that his aim was to remain true to the spirit of the original series.

However, there is a larger issue here - the ABC network's comical, but also curiously suspicious reaction(over-reaction /g) and actions towards the show. To halt production and replace the creator who produced what turned out to be a top-rated network premier even before it aired, and order the series "retooled" and start playing fast and loose with the scheduling, well, that should cause all but the most determinedly "incurious" people to wonder... /g

"Sounds like that old Twilight Zone...'To Serve Man'"

Of course it's a ripoff.
When last have you seen a single thing with any semblance of originality come from the Hollyweird brainstems, steph?

Banality's a sign of our times the result of mass Liberal-Socialism's dumbing down entire generations. The mass narcissism *and* sociophathic behavior(s) so prevalent, on *display* today are merely two other facets of the same monster.

We are, in deeper kimchee than we most even know.
The repercussions of the sabotage are the stuff of nightmares.

I don't wonder at all. "Wondering" implies it is in question.

The NEA ids winning the “dumbing down” and propaganda war, Bush/Kennedy merely added gasoline to the fire.

Speaking of nightmares, I had 2 last night. (Musta been because I had vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup right before bedtime. ;-)

What about the reference to universal healthcare, the use of the Internet to entice the youth, the hopey/changey message or the “all you have to do is trust us” mantra?

BTW: I didn’t trust that leader from the moment I saw her. Just like Barry.

What made you distrust her?

The Hawaiian birth certificate?

After nine years of snarky, anti-Bush, anti-Cheney, anti-religious and anti-conservative story lines in every network show, magazine article and big or small theatrical film...they can't take even mild satire directed at their leader.

I wonder what would happen if Hollywood turned out "The Assassination of a President" with Obama instead of Bush? More lectures on "free speech" and the evils of censorship? Prolly not.

get Evelyn Waugh and Flannery O’Connor confused.

Not surprising -- both Catholics, right?

The chain of links in this thread is fascinating.

This link, particularly, is educational, more so since I have no opportunity to watch HBO.

Buried Link

Check it out.

From that link in opost #113...

"And that’s the problem with ObamaMania. The Dems threw Hillary Clinton under the bus because many of them didn’t like her baggage, yet these same people, who screamed bloody murder about President Bush’s missing National Guard records, didn’t even blink at the fact that Obama has locked away so many things in his past and denied his associations with America-hating radicals. Yet his cabinet is full of those very same kind of people. Which brings us to the two most hilarious statements Obama made in the campaign, which were repeated in the film:

“People are tired of fear, distractions and diversions.” and “They (the people) don’t deserve four more years of failed economic policies.”

When it comes back, it will be a reality show filmed in the white house and the US will be a socialist paradise.

The original “V” was a refection of fascist take-overs in Germany and Italy. Tells you a lot when the re-make reminds us of the Obama regime! LOL!

There are many "erudite" but circumscribed minds who have absolutely convinced the intellectually insecure that any references, allusion and historical comparisons with Fascism and Totalitarianism are forbidden, or are the crutches used by the uneducated and the historical inaware.

Not always.

Morena Baccarin. Major hottie. Though better with longer hair.

Strange, the explanation of "taste." I prefer the short hair.

She was a "heavy" in Stargate: SG1 and it was really difficult to hate the eye candy.
