"...Some conservative Web sites, including http://Freerepublic.com, have accused Thomas of plagiarizing the work "The Snail" by the French artist Henri Matisse."

That's 'Watusi' on the left.
Looks like a fraud to me.
No wonder the Obamas liked it.

Stephens's explanation makes sense because it is inconceivable that the White House's art experts would imagine Thomas's painting was fraudulent or a copy. From the time of its birth, it would have been clear that Thomas's work was an homage; "The Snail" was extraordinarily famous when Thomas painted "Watusi." Ummmm...sure. Then why was this "homage" business never mentioned before? What a crock.

WaPo included a hot link to FR. Can’t say I ever remember a member of the MSM doing that.

Looks like a palette swap which is a cheap trick video game programmers used to do get more millage out of their sprites....
Next they will hire Ward Churchil to write “original” speeches and analysis....

Matisse’s eyesight was going as he grew older. He nearly gave up painting and art. I imagine he was experimenting with the possibilities of his emerging limitations.
Many works of art stand alone. Many others emerge as you learn the backstory.
I can’t recall which of Beethoven’s pieces were written as his hearing started to fail him, but I do know he composed them by feeling the notes with a wooden stick against his head to catch the vibration.

What an incredible piece of artwork. To me, it illustrates humanity’s struggle with oppression under the jack boot of the corporate state and the military industrial complex that enslaves us all. I also see a bunny rabbit getting humped by a mule.
