Fort Hood, Texas (CNN) -- A civilian police officer who shot the Fort Hood gunman four times during his bloody rampage stopped the attacker cold, a U.S. Army official said Friday.

Officer Kimberly Munley of the Fort Hood Police Department is a "trained, active first responder" who acted quickly after she "just happened to encounter the gunman," said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, Fort Hood's commanding general.

I've never been to Fort Hood, but I suspect that the area they have described would be an area where no field training is going on and therefore, there is no military carrying weapons around there except for base MPs.

I took Basic and AIT at Ft. Hood, and I suspect this area on Battalion Ave. wasn't too far from where my unit was housed, based upon video I saw. No, field training would not be held there, per se, but weapons (unloaded of course) may be carried by units on their way to/from training areas nearby. Personally owned weapons would only be carried with permission.

Like I said, it is all very simple and easy when your ass isn’t the one that’s on the line.

I’d Really like to know how many life and death situations that this Fifth grade teacher had been in to hand out that kind of advice to children?

I’d really like to see how he would “Really” handle a deadly situation .. unarmed!

9 times out of 10, without training .. He’d freeze .. He’d die!

There is NO WAY to tell someone how to handle a scenario like the one you describe!

When you are in a gun fight and You have No gun .. Your usually going to be the loser .. No Matter how good of a ‘rusher’ you are.

I can Guarantee you that Even Barry Sanders couldn’t outrun a bullet, let alone outrun one when running into it!

Sure, If I know that I am going to die, no matter What I do .. I would prefer to die fighting ‘but’, How or When do you decide that .. “Now’s The Time To Die Fighting”?

Children certainly don’t have That kind of experience!

The teacher is an ass!

The teacher is an ass!

For daring to come up with a plan? For having the aragonce to think he should do anything but stand there and die? What the heck are you talking about calling him an ass? You have better advice for those kids? Maybe "hide under the desk and wait to die"?

It's not just the Army. It's the direction this country has taken. those soldiers had no chance, apparently.

I live in WV, and also in NC. I drive through Camp LeJeune quite often. It would be easy to do the same thing there. Our military is as compromised as our police. They are tools of the state.

I’m sorry to burst Your bubble too but .. Like I said, If you are ever unlucky enough to be in a gun fight and you have no gun .. Your either going to die .. Rushing into it or Your going to take the chance that, Just maybe, if you run (away), drop or hide .. you just may be lucky enough to live!

BTW .. Did this teacher ask .. Which of those children would be brave enough to be the First one to “Rush” the gun man?

(Someone Always has to be first)

Her Twitter biography reads: “I live a good life ... a hard one, but I go to sleep peacefully @ night knowing that I may have made a difference in someone’s life.”

Oh, indeed you did make a difference, ma'am. On a scale few people ever have a chance to. You have earned a lifetime of peaceful nights, and the gratitude and admiration of a nation.

No bubble here. I carry a gun.

Sorry to burst yours but I prefer the United 93 mentality to the pre 9/11 one. Go read about Columbine or the Luby’s massacre if you want to learn what your mentality will earn those cowering under the table.

Maybe the poster’s comment wasn’t worded as well as it could have been, but the point is these men were soldiers, some recently returned from combat duty. How in the world could the terrorist be able to shoot that many people without others trying to take him down?

There's a line in Harry Potter where a man says, "But you know magic! Surely you can solve anything!" The response is, "The other side knows magic, too."

Time, distance, unarmed, and the perp was a soldier also. After the ballistic reports come in, I suspect we'll find that some of the people hit were hit by friendly fire. If the officer that took him down emptied a clip and hit him four times, where did the other rounds go? What was behind the perp? Other soldiers? A block wall that allowed ricochets?

There's a lot of stuff about this that isn't clear yet. Let's let it sort itself out a little.

The safe feeling was obviously an illusion , if any had it these days . I would not want to be the one justifying the no gun policy today . It seems so obvious now especially after the Fort Dix plot was uncovered . I assumed adequate steps would have been taken in the form of extra guards and MPs . Armed off duty personnel ? I really never expected to see that . They treated us like kids . Heck I was a 19 year old Warrant Officer , they would give me a bezillion dollar Cobra , but carry a pistol on post ? I bet they didn’t even have a form for it .

Since you are such a macho gun man .. You think that a group of children, “rushing” you, you being armed and all .. them being unarmed .. You think that they could Over power you and take your gun away?

Gotta run to the store but I look forward to your answer.

And you are obviously not paying attention. Asshat killer jumped up on a table, giving him the high ground, and fired into cubicles, giving the targets no quick exit to grab him, if they were still alive. You don’t see dead people, you see an opportunity to slam the military.

What did the Army do right? Nobody has answered that question on this thread. YMMV...

>This certainly makes the Army look bad. A female civilian cop takes out the shooter while Army men are mowed down.

What you’re failing to realize is that weapons/ammo is restricted on Army bases. Most of the soldiers are unarmed most of the time, even if they have the weapons they might not have live ammunition.

It’s almost like the shooter was in a federal building...

I am ex Army and inter service rivalry is a good for amusement , but nothing , nothing is funny today . This should never been allowed to happen . Somebody a heck of a lot higher up than those GIs being processed is at fault and is going to be relieved . Sounds likes a hand slap . So many fine lives taken . The fault lies pretty high up IMHO . I have asked Navy brothers how the USS Cole could have been attacked and they suspect decisions made far away from the ship led to those events . 17 sailors and still people refused to accept that we were at war .

I am not amused, nor tending that way.

The biggest challenge today, is that the citizens are not plowing their own fields. When you have no investment in the soil of your land, their is no value to your life or your heritage. When the government tells you when and how much to crap, there is no value left either!
