Back in 1989, the Democrat House, led by Ways and Means Chairman Dan Rostenkowski, passed the ‘Catastrophic Health Care Act.’ The Act promised to expand coverage and benefits, financed by a surcharge on senior’s existing Medicare benefits. Passage of the Act sparked on outcry from seniors. CBSNews goes back into the archives to find footage of one of the protests.
The report forgets to mention that Congress quickly repealed the Catastrophic Act in response to the voter backlash. Something current Members of Congress might want to keep in mind.
The problem for today’s Democrats is that the PelosiCare bill they are being pressured to support has a lot more to anger seniors than just a modest surcharge. Between the cuts to Medicare and numerous higher taxes, more people will lose under this bill than gain. That’s very dangerous politics. Again, if a small surcharge, in exchange for more benefits, was enough to spark protests that rattled on Old Bull like Rostenkowski, imagine the backlash when seniors realize they will lose lots of benefits in exchange for…nothing. Rostenkowski was genuinely surprised by the protests. After Tuesday’s elections results, however, Democrats can’t say they weren’t warned.

IF there is enough voter backlash in 2010 they may very well repeal it.
Just wait until the people actually get a look at what just passed. AARP is going to regret the day they sold out to Obama along with the AMA.
Now it is on to the Senate where Dr. Coburn is saying he will read all of the Reid bill on the floor with help which will delay it for months.
Why the rush to pass a bill that doesn’t take effect til 2013. Four years from now.

Show me one example of a government entitlement that has been taken away once it is started.

So the people won’t feel the pain until after the next election, and so they can collect from us for years before any benefits are actually paid.

Gosh, makes a person really miss old Rostenkowski...back from the era when stealing from the stamp drawer and petty cash was considered “corruption”. Nowadays, Obama appoints guys much worse than him to Cabinet positions!

I see no other solution than civil war, and people are too fat, dumb and happy to make that happen at this point. So just bend over and take it.

You sound like my husband, Freddd. I have been terrified of this bill... earlier tonight I priced dialysis machines. Imagine my delight at finding them less than $2500! My insurance pays $1000 per treatment. I could do my own dialysis with some help. I could save Blue Shield $100K per year. I wonder if this is what the British folks do...
In 1979 then president Smiley Carter created the Dept. of Education; since then we’ve had not one, but three Republican presidents and Republican majorities in Congress off and on. We haven’t managed to remove this parasite from the cabinet. Just a thought.
This, if it succeeds in the Senate, is going to be a terribly bitter pill for Seniors who benefit greatly from Medicare Advantage plans and I know my Medicare eligible clients are going to learn the whole awful story from me!!!

1. BEGINS TO CLOSE THE MEDICARE PART D DONUT HOLE — Reduces the donut hole by $500 and institutes a 50% discount on brand-name drugs, effective January 1, 2010.
2. IMMEDIATE HELP FOR THE UNINSURED UNTIL EXCHANGE IS AVAILABLE (INTERIM HIGH-RISK POOL) — Creates a temporary insurance program until the Exchange is available for individuals who have been uninsured for several months or have been denied a policy because of pre-existing conditions.
3. BANS LIFETIME LIMITS ON COVERAGE—Prohibits health insurance companies from placing lifetime caps on coverage.
4. ENDS RESCISSIONS—Prohibits insurers from nullifying or rescinding a patient’s policy when they file a claim for benefits, except in the case of fraud.
5. EXTENDS COVERAGE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE UP TO 27TH BIRTHDAY THROUGH PARENTS’ INSURANCE— Requires health plans to allow young people through age 26 to remain on their parents’ insurance policy, at the parents’ choice.
6. ELIMINATES COST-SHARING FOR PREVENTIVE SERVICES IN MEDICARE—Eliminates co-payments for preventive services and exempts preventive services from deductibles under the Medicare program.
7. IMPROVES HELP FOR LOW-INCOME MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES—Improves the low-income protection programs in Medicare to assure more individuals are able to access this vital help.
8. PROVIDES NEW CONSUMER PROTECTIONS IN MEDICARE ADVANTAGE— Prohibits Medicare Advantage plans from charging enrollees higher cost-sharing for services in their private plan than what is charged in traditional Medicare.
9. IMMEDIATE SUNSHINE ON PRICE GOUGING—Discourages excessive price increases by insurance companies through review and disclosure of insurance rate increases.
10. CONTINUITY FOR DISPLACED WORKERS—Allows Americans to keep their COBRA coverage until the Exchange is in place and they can access affordable coverage.
11. CREATES NEW, VOLUNTARY, PUBLIC LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE PROGRAM—Creates a long-term care insurance program to be financed by voluntary payroll deductions to provide benefits to adults who become functionally disabled.
12. HELP FOR EARLY RETIREES—Creates a $10 billon fund to finance a temporary reinsurance program to help offset the costs of expensive health claims for employers that provide health benefits for retirees age 55-64.
13. COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS—Increases funding for Community Health Centers to allow for a doubling of the number of patients seen by the centers over the next 5 years.
14. INCREASING NUMBER OF PRIMARY CARE DOCTORS — Provides new investment in training programs to increase the number of primary care doctors, nurses, and public health professionals.

Again this is what I have heard and gleaned in reading articles. I too have not read the entire bill itself.

It’s starting to look a lot like that’s the only way things will change at all in DC; evil abounds when good men do nothing, and we’ve done nothing about it for far too long.
Remember when congress passed the bill to build a wall on the Mexican border? And then they cut off the funding the next year? Two can play at that game!

So true. Never trust a Democrat. Every member of the Democrat legislature has known for the past thirty years that their party was being controlled by far left wingers and yet they chose to stay with their party. They could have switched it they had enough outrage about what their party had become.
Hillary Clinton said a couple of years ago that they would go for the red states. Well we can see the charade they put on to fool millions of trusting people in the red states who fell for this charade.

Maybe it’s a good thing that they constructed it to have a delay taking effect. Once they dismantle the current system, it’d be like putting Humpty Dumpty together again. Unfortunately they’ve front loaded much of the financing, but a strong takeover in 2010 could reverse it, (I hope).
This ought to mobilize the conservatives who haven’t already jumped on the bandwagon. And we should relentlessly remind those who votred for it that they are leaving office in 2010, it’s a given. The momentum cannot slow down.

The house can cut off funding. Nothing king obuma can do about that. The most famous and recent example was congress cutting off money to Vietnam in 1975, causing the collapse of the country and a victory for the communists.
