according to Canadian government officials, a biography of U.S. President Barack Obama provided to Prime Minister Stephen Harper shortly after Mr. Obama's inauguration last January qualifies as a state secret.
Under the Access to Information Act, Canwest News Service requested all briefing materials provided to the prime minister ahead of Mr. Obama's visit to Canada in February.

The 77 pages of heavily censored documents released to Canwest include memos to Mr. Harper from his foreign-policy adviser, a letter from Canada's former ambassador to the United States, Michael Wilson, as well as talking points to prepare Mr. Harper for the meeting. It also includes biographies of the president and officials who accompanied the president on the trip to Canada, including National Security Advisor James Jones, National Economic Council director Lawrence Summers, Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.
In blacking out the biographies of the president and his entourage, officials cited a section of the act that allows the government to refuse records whose disclosure could be "injurious to the conduct of international affairs, the defence of Canada or any states allied or associated with Canada."

Retired colonel Michel Drapeau, an expert in access-to-information law at the University of Ottawa, said it's not surprising that much of the briefing material on such a high-level meeting was being withheld. Canadian courts have tended to support the government's view that releasing such materials could hurt relations with other countries, he said.
But he said it was "silly" for Canadian officials to withhold the biography of such a prominent public figure.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) were not allowed to leave a Russian airport Sunday and were locked in a room briefly.
The incident prevented their departure for about three hours, but Obama told the Sun-Times “it ended up not being a very big deal.”
The senators had their passports seized by local officials at an airport in Perm. Obama said the officials demanded, unsuccessfully, to inspect the DC-9 military aircraft being used by the congressional delegation for the trip.

Although he was on a first-time diplomatic mission, Obama has traveled extensively, spending part of his youth in Indonesia and visiting Kenya, where his father was born. He noted that as a back- packing college student he had “a lot less leverage than this time.”
Obama , a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, and Lugar, its chairman, left Wednesday for a trip to inspect sites where nuclear and biological weapons are slated to be destroyed in Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. On Sunday, the U.S. group was scheduled to fly from Perm to Kiev, Ukraine. But border guards wanted proof that the group’s aircraft — which Obama said looked like a “mini-Air Force One” — was really an official U.S. government plane, which would be exempt from an inspection.
Robert Gibbs, Obama ‘s spokesman traveling with him, said in an e-mail that “the border guards took our passports and demanded to inspect our aircraft, which we refused. We were moved to a room to wait.”
“At one point they were demanding to inspect virtually everything, including the gifts their representatives at the missile facility had given us.” The border guard said “they were acting on the authority of the FSB,” the Russian intelligence agency.

Re post 8: President Bush’s bio is pretty much an open book. I doubt that there was anything controversial or damaging in it, so no one would have requested it.

He wasn’t born in Canada. His media was crowing back in 04 that he was born in Kenya. Not so much nowadays.
Better yet, elect a president whose life is an open book. Sarah Palin comes to mind.
Canada was probably threatened with NO trade or something big like that. It’s not like Stephen Harper. The consequences of releasing the information must be very injurious. This Obama bio has tentacles from all over the world it would appear. I don’t like it at all. CO
Jo I don’t believe this bio shows that he is eligible. Otherwise, WHY the blackout? It’s much much more serious than that and I KNOW PM Harper personally. He’s a very very honorable man. Something big and bad is behind this one. CO
I have tried to find that out. Since I trained as an RN in the Vancouver General Hospital, I tried to get a doctor friend of mine to go to medical records and search out if his mother was in VGH on the date of his birth. He said, he couldn’t get medical information unless the person was his own patient but that he could find out if she was a patient in the hospital on a certain date. He diddled around for months and then when he did go, the hospital had already been threatened with a law suit if any personal info on him was given out. There ya go!! This thing is big and frankly, the SCOTUS is Constitutionally bound, I believe, to get to the bottom of this. CO

That’s right, Canada knows and many many other countries who are actually enemies of the United States. It seriously is bad for you. OBAMA HAS ALWAYS BEEN DETRIMENTAL TO THE US as all can see with each passing day. Time for him to be removed. CO
