Advice For Obama: Knock Heads On Health Care
He 'could take a few pages from Lyndon Johnson's book,' says Rep. Conyers
WASHINGTON - The most senior African-American in Congress offered some unsolicited advice Monday to President Barack Obama on how to get his signature health care bill through a balky Senate: knock their heads together.
"The president could take a few pages from Lyndon Johnson's book ... and start knocking heads together," said Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
Conyers, who spoke to reporters in Detroit, first came to Congress in 1965, the year Medicare and the Voting Rights Act both passed under the strong hand of Johnson, by then the president. Obama was not yet 4 years old.
The House passed the sweeping health care legislation late Saturday on a narrow 220-215 vote. By Sunday, the bill was being declared a nonstarter in the Senate.
A government health insurance plan included in the House bill is unacceptable to a few Democratic moderates who hold the balance of power in the there. These senators are locked in a battle with liberals, with the fate of health care legislation at stake.
On Sunday, Obama urged the Senate to follow the lead of the House, like a runner in a relay race. The president says he's confident senators will do the right thing.
But Sen. Joe Lieberman wasted no time in saying he can't support the public insurance plan in the House bill.

Not going to be an issue. Watch what will happen, it'll be the old congressional rope-a-dope. The public option will be stripped out of the senate version so RATs like Lieberman will have cover to vote for it. It passes, then the public option (along with abortion) is put in the conference version for Barry to sign. Everyone has cover for when they go back to their districts and Socialism marches on.

I wonder if the good mr conyers (wife going to prison) remembers that LBJ lasted only one term. Yes he was known to knock heads, and yes he was a wannabe FDR, but it was a sizeable fraction of Dems (Kennedy clan lead by Bobby and segregationist lead by Gore) not Republicans that ultimately brought his presidency to an inglorious end. Bobby thought LBJ a dunce and suspected him of ulterior motives towards his brother (Jack). The Dem segregationist crowd was fragmented by LBJs civil rights move and withheld their support for him. After you spend your wad buying votes you realize your coalition is nothing by bought men and not really fit for heavy combat. Too bad, so sad. I personnally don’t think bammy has the stones and insight that LBJ did.
If the public option is put back in, it wont pass the Senate when it returns from conference. Similarly, if abortion is put back in, the bill could easily fail in the House when it returns.
I hope you’re right, but I don’t have much faith in our congress. This close vote was all a dog and pony show for the masses. Soetoro and his goon Pelosi are playing us.

Mr. Conyers is incredibly ignorant of history he lived through. Johnson would have never gotten the Civil Rights law passed without the Republican votes in the House and Senate. So much for Johnson’s controlling his own party.
Also, Johnson was such an ineffective leader that he chose to not run for a second term rather than being defeated by another Democrat in the primaries.
0bama should treat Johnson as a role model alright.
Doesn’t the final version which comes out of the conference committee have to be passed by both houses before it goes to the presidents desk.
Conyers, go back to Detroit and crawl into one of your abandoned houses, you hypocritical creep!
