Steele: White Republicans are scared of me By Jordan Fabian - 11/09/09 03:12 PM ET

Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Michael Steele, who is known for making controversial statements, on Sunday said that white Republicans are afraid of him.

Steele also took aim at some in his own party last week as well, saying that he would "come after" centrist Republicans who support healthcare reform.

The Republican chairman appeared on NewsOne's "Washington Watch" this weekend, a new Sunday polititcal talk show aimed at a black audience. The host, Roland Martin, asked Steele how could Republicans could reach out to black voters. Steele responded by talking about issues such as education, small business, jobs and the econoy, The rest is in a partial transcript:

MARTIN: But your candidates got to talk to them. One of the criticisms I've always had is Republicans -- white Republicans -- have been scared of black folks.

STEELE: You're absolutely right. I mean I've been in the room and they've been scared of me. I'm like, "I'm on your side" and so I can imagine going out there and talking to someone like you, you know, [say] "I'll listen." And they're like "Well." Let me tell you. You saw in Christie and you saw in McDonnell a door open because they went in and engaged. McDonnell was very deliberate about spending...

MARTIN: Right.

STEELE: I mean, Sheila Johnson was on his team. I mean, that was a big deal. That's because he engaged her and she helped navigate him through that relationship.

Steele is the first African-American to serve as RNC chairman and has at times made controversial remarks regarding race.

Shortly after he was elected chairman in February, Steele said that the Republican Party needed to conduct an "off the hook" public relations campaign to attract blacks and Hispanics in "urban-suburban hip-hop settings." He also said that he would attract minority voters with fried chicken and potato salad.

I don’t really understand what he meant from the context, but I hope Lindsey Graham is afraid of him. And Lindsey doesn’t like white people these days.

What a stupid thing to say to the press, let alone on TV. You can bet the democrats are lovin’ this and will use it in every black district next election

Well, statistically there is a greater chance that you intend to rob me at gunpoint.

sorry, just feel like one ridiculous racial provocation deserves another.

I can't imagine anyone being afraid of this incompetent fool. Well, maybe afraid he will screw everything up. Maybe afraid he will do something stupid, again. He has screwed up every congressional race(two in NY and one in California). Get rid of this guy and stop wasting millions of dollars on Dede Scozzafava and other losing candidates.
This is one more reason to clean house in 2010.

I have just stopped giving a damn about race. This is so far beyond stupid: I’m not scared of you because of your skin color or cultural background, Mr. Steele. I’m disgusted by you because you’re a fool with no backbone and no plan, catering to the media and the squashy middle.

Anybody have a contact email/phone number for this dolt? I’d love to spend some time giving him a fair piece of my mind.

That was a good one right there.

We should all mock race-baiting wherever it comes from.

I dunno, is he just trying to establish his cred among blacks? Is he using code language that pale faces don’t understand?

The only thing that scares me about Steele is whether he is a Republican or a Rhino

Nothing new for the GOP.

Over the amnesty fight they labeled opponents racist, bigoted xenophobes, over Meyers some suggested we are sexist. Graham tells constituents who are righteously angry over the state of our nation that they’re nothing but angry white people and to get out, etc.

I guess that race and sex-baiting has worked so well for the Democrats that they’re willing to give it a whirl in their continued efforts to be Democrat Lite.

Well, good luck to ‘em.

Steele: White Republicans are scared of me

For the same reason that Blacks are afraid of the Klu Klux Klan. Both Steele and the Klan are racists.

Steele believes in "Affirmative Action" which means that it's OK for him to discriminate against me (but not the other way around). I don't believe that's what Martin Luther King Jr had in mind when he spoke about equality.
