MOUNTAIN HOME, IDAHO -- The setting sun is streaming in the living room window of Marion Lewis's house as he puts aside his cigarette and starts telling the story of the day his daughter was murdered.

break

He remembers the day, Oct. 3, 2002, when Lori Lewis Rivera was shot to death by the D.C. snipers at a gas station in Kensington. Two thousand miles away, her father was oblivious, out in the wilderness running a giant rock-crushing machine. Lewis stares at the floor as he recalls it, kneading his beefy hands and wiping away tears with his fingers.

Seven years since John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo went on a homicidal rampage across the Washington area, their work still torments the families it touched.

"I don't have any doubt that I could pull the switch or push the plunger myself," Lewis said.

Court refuses to halt sniper’s execution

The Supreme Court on Monday refused an eleventh-hour appeal to block the execution of John Allen Muhammad, mastermind of the 2002 Washington-area sniper attacks.

Muhammad is scheduled to die by injection Tuesday in a Virginia prison for the Oct. 9, 2002, killing of Dean Harold Meyers at a Manassas, Va., gas station.

Though the appeal was denied, Justice John Paul Stevens expressed concern about inmates being executed before their appeals process is concluded.

Prosecutor plans to witness Muhammad execution

If all goes as planned, Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert — known for putting more men on death row than any other prosecutor in Virginia — will witness his first execution tonight.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to block the scheduled execution of sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad. The court did not comment Monday on why it refused to consider his appeal. Muhammad’s only option now is last-minute clemency from Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.

Ebert said he will witness the execution along with 12 members of the law-enforcement task force responsible for hunting down Muhammad and teen accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo following their three-week murder spree in October 2002.

Muhammad is set to die by injection at the Greensville Corrections Center at 9 p.m. for the slaying of Vietnam veteran Dean Harold Meyers at a Sunoco gas station on Va. 234 outside Manassas. Meyers, of Gaithersburg, Md., was the ninth victim of the sniper attacks in Washington, Maryland and Virginia. In all, 13 people were shot and 10 died.

Meet the man who prosecuted the D.C. sniper

break

Virginia’s death row is lined with killers the Prince William County commonwealth’s attorney has sent to their demise. Next up: John Allen Muhammad, mastermind of the D.C. sniper attacks that left 10 dead in the Washington area in 2002.

Mr. Ebert, 72, has sent more men to the death chamber than any other prosecutor in Virginia - more than a dozen, with Muhammad and three others awaiting execution.

Muhammad execution nears, some victims’ families move on

For three weeks in 2002, John Allen Muhammad led a two-man sniper team that struck on his orders, claimed 10 lives and deliberately terrorized Virginia, Maryland and Washington.

"Call me God," police were told in notes left at the scene of two attacks.

He is set to be executed by injection Tuesday for the slaying of Dean Harold Meyers, 53, shot in the head from long distance at a Manassas-area service station the evening of Oct. 9, 2002.

Break

Robert Meyers plans to attend Muhammad's execution, set for 9 p.m. at Greensville Correctional Center near Jarratt. An undisclosed number of family members of other sniper victims also hope to witness.

His former imam from his mosque in Falls Church, Virginia is calling him a hero. He's a recruiter for al-qaeda in Yemen now.
