What's 'V' really about? (A cute stranger arrives one day with free health care...)
NY Post ^ | November 10, 2009 | Kyle Smith

ABC's thrilling and politically potent new sci-fi series "V," whose second episode airs tonight at 8 on ABC, pits the paranoids against the Obamanoids -- and it's the paranoids who see the truth.

Through the honeyed tones of the alien leader Anna (Morena Baccarin), who wins over Earth in less time than it took President Obama to impress Planet Nobel, ABC promises to bring us an hour of devastating, witty and keenly on-point Obama satire every week in a series fuelled by the audacity of nope.

Who cares what the network news divisions are up to when their entertainment chiefs can okay something as fluent and fierce as this deft little raid on liberalism?

Like Obama, Anna offers an exciting mixture of the new (she's not a white male; how bad could she be?), the young (her hipster minions promote the new era of hope, with a nod to Shepard Fairey, by tagging the streets with spraypainted "V" logos) and the post-patriotically groovy.

"We don't divide ourselves into countries. We're one united people," Anna says of her civilization. Of his, the self-described "citizen of the world" Obama has said, "I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism."

< snip >

But to conservatives, this is the perfect cigar to savor after a sumptuous meal -- because it says that no matter who is nominally in charge, snaky, disingenuous liberalism is the ever-lurking villain.

“The Audacity of Nope” would be an awesome title for a book that details the idea of self-restraint in the way we govern our lives, raise our children and handle our government.

I saw the first episode. Not bad. It’s like they made a live-action series about a real-life cartoon.

False promise of free health care... corrupt reporters willing to give up principles to please the oppressors, a youth outreach program similar to the Nazi’s, destruction of any group that opposes the plan... Wait a sec, “I thought this was science fiction??”

When "All in the family" first came out, some of my buddies thought it was a very conservative show - they didn't see the left mocking American values. We were too young.

I wonder how many on the left are cheering for the aliens?

V is about smiley-faced fascism. It was about this same theme in the 80’s. That the’bummers see themselves in it is their own problem.

I wonder what the writers were thinking. Is this by some clever conservative who pulled the wool over the eyes of the Hollywood left? Is it someone who simply decided to do a remake of an old show and didn’t notice the parallels? Now that the parallel is getting more talk than the plot is, will Hollywood rework the remaining episodes to try to create a Palin parallel (cute brunette leader = dangerous) that is superficially stronger than the Obama parallel (evil, un-American power grabbing socialist dictator = dangerous)?

Or another good title, “The Mendacity of Hope.”

I’ve talked to several friends about this in the last week.

The writers of this show were not making a point of writing about Obama, they were following the storyline that was laid out in 1983 in the original mini-series.

Those writers were not writing about any particular politician either, they were following the storyline that was laid out by Sinclair Lewis in his 1935 book “It Can’t Happen Here”, about the rise of Fascism in America.

So, if there are supporters of President Obama who feel this storyline is about him... well, if the fascist shoe fits.

As a HUGH fan of Firefly, I really like Morena... However, the young lady that plays "Lisa," Laura Vandervoort, is INCREDIBLE! As an actress, of course...
