Which all leads me back to my premise, which is that the Constitution was a mistake. If the framers themselves couldn't hold to what they promised, who can? There was no need for a national consolidated government.

Interesting point. Had we not had a national constitution with a singular common national government would we not then have been a set of individuals states and nations? Maybe a treaty was in order among the states?

Without the Federal Government, Texas and California would be its own nation and the Louisiana purchase would have never been made. Forget about Alaska and Hawaii. I suspect "America" would look a lot different today and we would not be where we are. We would certainly not have ever become a Global Superpower and it is likely Germany and the Soviet Union would be the two Super Powers. I am quite certain in fact, the whole world would look a lot different and our standard of living would be considerably lower.

After considering your points, what ills there may have been with creating a federal government, the pros by far have outweighed the cons and the consitution was truly visionary for its time if not perfect.

Your thoughts?

Have you never heard of the Articles of Confederation? Before the Constitution, we were a confederate league of independent states.

As for the rest of it, if the US had remained like Switzerland it would be fine by me.
