AmeriCorps Inspector General Shredded White House Documents at Request of Agency’s Spokeswoman Thursday, November 12, 2009 By Fred Lucas, Staff Writer

(CNSNews.com) – The acting inspector general of AmeriCorps said he shredded White House documents at the request of an agency press spokeswoman that pertained to the controversial firing of the previous inspector general, who was ousted after investigating a political ally of President Obama.

The e-mail message from agency spokeswoman Ranit Schmelzer seemed urgent, as she wrote: “WH documents were sent in error. Can you please destroy them? And can you confirm you receive this e-mail?” Acting IG Kenneth Bach responded 13 minutes later writing, “Confirmed, documents were shredded.”

The email exchanges between Bach and Schmelzer, as well as other documents pertaining to the firing of the AmeriCorps inspector general, were obtained by CNSNews.com through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

The documents referenced in the Bach-Schmelzer email exchange included a draft of a letter to be signed by President Obama that would be sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to inform her that Obama was firing Gerald Walpin as inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which runs AmeriCorps, and also a set of talking points to be used in explaining to the media why Walpin was being fired.

If Bachman had any sense at all, he did shred the documents— after scanning or otherwise making copies first.

This is not all that big a deal. In fact, what's described is pretty standard practice for dealing with documents that were improperly sent/received.

To begin with, it is highly, highly doubtful that the documents in question were the originals, nor is it likely that they were the only copies.

Now, if the originals have also been shredded, that would be something. But there is no evidence that occurred.

More interesting is the degree of cooperation between the WH and AmeriCorps on this matter, which is made quite clear by the exchange. That's where the fire is ... don't focus on non-issues.

I think that shredding a document without having preserved a proper facsimile thereof is a crime.

I’m sure that the Attorney General will be right on this...right?

Has anyone noticed that there are so many questionable and illegal goings on in this administration that it is difficult in zeroing in on any one. We are fragmented because of it.

More come to light before we can investigate and fully disclose the last one!

We are trying to put out a forest fire with a child's sand bucket!

One is not allowed to destroy documents that the destroyer has reason to believe will be required in an investigation, particularly if the destroyer (or the one who directs destruction) is an attorney.

There was an in-house counsel for Arthur Andersen & Co., the defunct accounting firm, who was criminally charged for urging destruction of documents before they were subpoenaed.

Here this was a known controversial situation. I think that the replacement inspector general is culpable if the facts are as represented.
