Army sought ways to channel Hasan's absorption with Islam

Army psychiatrists at Walter Reed Army Medical Center who supervised Maj. Nidal M. Hasan's work as a psychiatric fellow tried to turn his growing preoccupation with religion and war into something productive by ordering him to attend a university lecture series on Islam, the Middle East and terrorism, according to a Walter Reed staff member familiar with Hasan's medical training.

The psychiatric staff at Walter Reed did not discuss kicking him out of the service, according to the staff member. In fact, Hasan was initially considered a good medical school candidate because he had spent time as an enlisted soldier and had cared for his siblings after his parents died, both attributes that supervisors believed indicated he had a healthy work ethic.

What about channeling him into a deep dark, damp prison cell for life?

Well, that worked out real well for them, didn't it?

This guy was a human IED waiting to go off and his fuse was lit out in the open, in full view.

No, they just needed to get him involved in sports.

So instead of him waking up in the morning and saying "Kill infidels!" he would wake up in the morning and say "Yay, tetherball!!"

“Army sought ways to channel Hasan’s absorption with Islam...

by

“ordering him to attend a university lecture series on Islam, the Middle East and terrorism,”

1) Let’s see...The cure to patient’s “absorption” problem was immerse him into the object of his “absorption”? How does that work?

2) Who exactly “ordered” that “cure”?

In the Austin American Statesman today there was an article stating that the Army has no record of enlisted service for Hasan and that he never filed anything to leave the Army. I find this really wierd. The Army said that their record indicates that his military service began when he started the medical school program in 1997! What was he doing for the 8 years that his family thought he was in the Army? The Killeen paper also said that his neighbor in the apartment complex never saw him bring anyone there until the night before the shooting when a man came home with him, stayed about 15 minutes and left. I’ve never seen that mentioned again in any report! Wierd!!

In fact, Hasan was initially considered a good medical school candidate because he had spent time as an enlisted soldier and had cared for his siblings after his parents died, both attributes that supervisors believed indicated he had a healthy work ethic.

These were his qualifications? Not high MCAT scores or outstanding evaluations?

A whole lot of people here at FR have spent time as enlisted soldiers and cared for other people. Give them all a free med school education.

Or is there some other characteristic that is required to be admitted under these bogus criteria?

Maybe these same ‘shrinks’ could get O J Simpson named as the head of battered women’s shelters in the entire USA so he could beome more ‘sensitive’ to women?

They are all cray!!!

If I have a rattlesnake in the bathtub, moving it to the kitchen sink will NOT take care of the problem.

Do you mind posting that article on its own thread? Or link it here?

I would say the Army has his enlisted record, but they are hiding it. I posted an article a few day ago about his community college record in CA near Fort Irwin that said he was an E-3 taking classes there. He could have been in the Opfor force at NTC out there with a combat arms MOS. I could see the Army wanting to hide that. You get retirement credits for enlisted service so Hasan could have retired as a Major as soon as he finished his Med School obligations. Also, “No Major Left Behind” is a pretty accurate slogan, I had heard about the 95% selection rate to Captain a few years ago.

It was either that or put him in “time-out” for a few minutes.

Do you have a link for this? I also read that he never formally filed to be discharged, but your other points:

“Army has no record of enlisted service for Hasan” is curious.

Do you have link for this?

Also:”until the night before the shooting when a man came home with him...”

I thought neighbor saw a visitor the morning of the shooting...

Did you see that in the same article?

Authorities are desparate to try to prove he acted alone-— with no jihadist/terrorist associations

Sorry, I have been trying to post the link but must be doing something wrong. You can go to austinstatesman.com and the title is Shooting Suspects Behavior Concerned Supervisor’s. It is an AP story by Brett Blackledge and Richard Lardner. The article about someone visiting him the night before was a few days ago and unfortunately I didn’t save it but I’ll keep looking.

The Army said that their record indicates that his military service began when he started the medical school program in 1997!

That's his officer record that they released to the media. It also says he graduated Virginia Tech in 1997, but Va Tech says he graduated in 1995.

A community college in CA shows him attending there in 1989, as an enlisted man from Fort Irwin, and the Army says they have no record of him at Fort Irwin.
