Both Dodd, GOP rival lose ground in new poll

HARTFORD — U.S. Sen. Christopher J. Dodd and his chief Republican rival both took hits in the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

After posting some slight gains, Dodd is sliding back down again in voters' assessments of his job performance, and more than half of state voters say he doesn't deserve to be re-elected.

"The poll is bad news for Sen. Dodd. ... His job approval rating has dropped. He falls further behind the Republican hopefuls," said Douglas Schwartz, director of the Quinnipiac poll.

There were also some disappointing results for former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District. He has been the front-runner for months for the GOP nomination in the poll.

In previous polls, Simmons received 43 percent to 48 percent support in a hypothetical Republican primary. In the new poll, he dropped to 28 percent.

Wrestling promoter Linda McMahon got 17 percent support in first poll taken since she announced her candidacy in September. Tom Foley, a former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, saw his share rise from 5 percent to 9 percent.

Schwartz said Simmons was the biggest Republican loser in the new poll.

"Now, we have got a closer race. Before McMahon's entrance, he dominated. He was in the 40s and nobody else got up to 5 percent," he said.

The McMahon campaign said its candidate has risen from a virtual unknown to a serious contender in a Republican primary.

Simmons, Foley and McMahon all beat Dodd in general election match-ups. State Sen. Sam S.F. Caligiuri, R-Waterbury, tied with Dodd. Peter Schiff lost to the senator by 1 percentage point.

Most of the Republican candidates largely remain unknown. Simmons has the most name recognition, but 49 percent of voters still don't know enough about him to have an opinion of him.

Schwartz said this could work against Republican candidates — voters may not like them once they get to know more about them.

"It will be interesting to see as Republicans begin to beat each other up in the Republican primary whether their numbers will fall," he said.

Keep hope alive, Qunnipiac. OTOH, it looks like your boy Dodd is toast, doesent it?

Not McMahon. No one heard of her yesterday.

The problem is, Republican politicians are POLITICIANS!

The political class sees themselves as rulers not servants. And as rulers, they have two goals:
1 - Keep their job at all costs, even if it hurts the public.
2 - Get as rich as possible on the public dollar.

I hate them all, I just hate Democrats a little more.

Simmons is the Snowe/Collins of Connecticut. He could have beaten Courtney had he not voted with the Dems against many of President Bush's policies. He is another Weicker. Sam Caligiuri would be the best candidate but he is relatively unknown except for the Waterbury district where he served honorably as Mayor Pro Tem after another Republican scandal.

What an inaccurate headline!

Dodd is dropping in polls vis his general election chances.

The leading Republican, which must go through the primary process to even get a chance to run against Dodd, is dropping in the Republican Primary polls.

Note the Republicans (whomever they are) are not dropping in the general election poll results... The headline implies it, though.

I’m with you. Our forefathers said this type of government would not work with ungodly people in government positions. Now, we have a whole congress full of lying, greedy, self-serving government pimps.

time to join Independence Caucus at www.ourcaucus.com and then join the Connecticut group within. They have a proven track record of throwing out incumbents and are starting to focus on Dodd with their Big Stick videos (already did the Boxer ones, Dodd is next). Whoever they vette and work for will win. So far Caliguri and Schiff seem to be the favorites. Simmons and McMahon are not acceptable.

I’d love to see Peter Schiff win, if only to watch heads explode!

I also think he’d do a helluva job.
