Environmentalists make zero sense to me. They claim to be the protectors and lovers of nature. But part of nature is that species go extinct.

No, the opposite. Urbanites want a "clean" river.
Are they shifting cities to composting toilets so that the outfall from treatment plants doesn't kill them?
No, the opposite. Urbanites don't want to deal with composting toilets.
Are they getting rid of the exotic smelt that is cross-breeding and hybridizing them?
Probably not possible. Urbanites love cheap imported goods and won't do a damned thing about controlling such introductions.
