CDC: STDs On The Rise; Blacks Most Afflicted

MetroSource News 11/16/2009 00:15:27

(Washington, DC) -- Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in America. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control found that in 2008 cases of chlamydia rose by 100-thousand from 2007, while gonorrhea grew to 337-thousand cases and syphilis rose 18-percent in the same time period.

Teen girls from 15 to 19 years old had the most cases of both STDs. Nearly 71-percent of reported gonorrhea cases and almost half of all syphilis and chlamydia cases last year afflicted blacks, who make up 12-percent of the population. Black women from 15 to 19 years old had the highest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea.

According to the CDC, more than 19-million new STDs occurred last year, with almost half the cases afflicting people between the ages of 15 to 24. John Douglas, director of the CDC's division of sexually transmitted diseases, said, quote, "We have among the highest rates of STDs of any developed country in the world. We are not honestly and openly dealing with this issue and it's the larger issue of sexual health."

i'll get really picky here - the term 'afflicted' is more typically used when the physical condition is, more or less, unavoidable, such as 'afflicted with arthritis'.

let's face it....these aren't diseases which sneak up on a person. There is a direct known, and mostly avoidable, cause. To perceive it as otherwise, IMHO, removes a level of responsibility and perpetuates the problem.

That's not picky, it's a VERY valid point! I work at a group of radio stations and write a lot of news. When other writers make mistakes like that it gets under my skin.

"Drowned to death" and "flags at half mast" instead of half staff" are especially irritating to me!

Not that my writings are perfect, LOL!

I love your post about DC. I have no idea why anyone would think that the federal government is the answer to any problems when the environs speak so clearly as to the inability of our federal government to deal with social issues under their only true jurisdiction. It continues to amaze me that our Congressmen look at DC and never leave once they go there even though the districts they represent are Edens compared to the cesspool of DC.

Well the leaders in the black community keep saying “we must come together as a people” and this is what happens...

Half mast is the proper maritime terminology.

The people who annoy you also have decks and bulkheads in lieu of floors and walls.

Latex is like 100% protection from STD’s. That’s why doctors use them. The problem with using condoms is that people don’t. It’s a false sense of security if you just keep it in your pocket or put it on during the act.

Amazing how the statements of Wright and Farrakhan mirror the assertions of the superstitious uneducated tribal shamans of Africa.

What are the demographics of Washington DC and the surrounding urban area?

“The 2000 U. S Census sites the population of the city of Washington at 572,059 and ranks the city 21st in size compared with other U. S. cities. The population is 47.1% male and 52.9% female. The race breakdown is as follows: White: 30.8%; Black: 60.0%; American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.3%; Asian: 2.7%; Other race: 3.8%; Two or more races: 2.4%; Hispanic/Latino: 7.9%.”

I submit that a thorough geneology would show not less than 70 % are “2 or more races”. The same as any other community in North America.

In REALITY, you are right,

but the census goes off of “self-identification”.

I always check “mixed race” just to mess them up, and to comply with reality. Once they can no longer use the census data to dole out our tax money to preferred groups, we’ll all be better off.

True, but in the US, we are forced to choose one category (including the asinine “Hispanic/Latino”). My significant other is from Brazil, where there is a category (”Pardo” or brown) for Tri-Racial folks such as herself.

I am coming up on my third census. I have always refused to pick a category, and there is plenty of free legal representation on this one, should the government ever feel frisky.

They, dont want this particular issue to even appear on the outside edge of the public radar, however - so they will go away same as always.
