SALT LAKE CITY -- A gay rights group says it is securing Republican support in the Utah state Legislature for anti-discrimination laws.
The Deseret News reports members of the Utah Log Cabin Republicans, a gay and lesbian political group, say two bills granting gays extra rights in Utah will have GOP sponsors when they go before the Legislature in the 2010 session. The group is not saying who those sponsors are.
One of the measures is similar to an ordinance approved in Salt Lake City that states gay workers can't be fired because of their sexuality.
The Deseret News reports another bill gives gay couples some adoption rights over their own relatives. It gives priority in adoptions to familial relations over Utah's cohabitation rule.
The group plans to announce its Republican sponsors this week.
Log Cabin President Melvin Nimer told the paper after several meetings with state lawmakers, he thinks there is a new willingness among lawmakers to consider the bills.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints last week announced support for two of Salt Lake City's nondiscrimination ordinances. Those measures make it illegal for employers and landlords to discriminate based on sexual orientation.
The snowball's been kicked off the top of the hill...this means retailers & other businesses (15 employees & up) have little say on how -- for example -- a cross-dresser dresses @ work...unless they want to face $1,000 fines.

Now, the actions in Salt Lake City have simply emboldened the homosexual rights' proponents to start taking on adoption laws state-wide.

Let me guess.....
It is already true nationwide that you cannot fire somebody just for being a homo. However, it must ALWAYS be true that you can fire someone for ACTING like one.

Well, first of all this doesn't simply address a narrow "sexual orientation" like homosexuality -- 2% of the population. It's much broader. It includes, for example, cross-dressing bisexuals. Or cross-dressing straight employees ("gender benders").
The way the SLC council defined "Sexual orientation" was "a person’s actual or perceived orientation as heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual."
However, it must ALWAYS be true that you can fire someone for ACTING like one.
Well, again, the SL City people -- and apparently now some UT state legislators -- never stopped @ homosexuality. For example, they also included "Gender identity" which they defined as "a person’s actual or perceived gender identity, appearance, mannerisms, or other characteristics of an individual with or without regard to the person’s sex at birth."
IOW, a person doesn't even have to be a homosexual or have a certain gender identity...it could be simply someone "perceived" to be that way. Example: A cross-dressing employee or applicant. [So now we keep codifying vague "perceptions" that someone might have? What other thought patterns do they want to legislate?]
The employee or potential employee in question might be "straight" -- but they reflect upon your business if they dress in a flamboyant or "flaming" type of way. Now SLC business-owners of a greater size aren't allowed to have discretion lest they be accused of "discriminating" vs. such a "gender identity."
So, indeed, they HAVE codified newly protected behavior -- by codifying thought patterns of the rest of us!

(And the difference is what, again? As they say, the more the right moves to the "center," the more the "center" is placed smack dab in what has always been regarded as "leftist" territory...creeping "progressivism" until the right is no mo')
That is sidestepping the question. I wholeheartedly disagree with what the Log Cabin Republicans are doing here and homosexuality is a huge sin BUT I also thank them for their votes. At least they’re smart enough to understand that even homosexuals must live under the current economic system. What’s good for heterosexuals, is also good for homosexuals. Same for races. Freedom, choice, smaller govt. less regulation creates an environment for economic growth and rising employment. It’s good for everyone. Too bad RATS can’t get that through their thick heads.
Please crunch the #s & do the math. First of all, both homosexuals AND Lds are about 2% of the population apiece. With Mormons, you know who they are; with homosexuals, you don't (many closeted). Mormons are probably 80 % Republican; with homosexuals, 80% aren't.
#1 Of the known homosexuals, 20% vote Republican. (At least, that's how many voted for Bush).
#2 So even if 1 in 5 known homosexuals vote Republican, they represent somewhere around half of a 1% of the population-at-large when it comes to voting for Republicans & Republican ideals.
#3 Even then, what % of THAT group (the 1 in 5 homosexuals who voted for Bush) are even linked/associated to groups like Log Cabin? (Answer: A very small minority of them)
Now. Please tell me ANY constituency ANYWHERE that represents at best .5% of your vote that gets catered to as much as moderate Republican Log Cabin types? (And, keep in mind, Log Cabin probably in reality is linked to only 10% of that -- 0.05% of the population).
[To be statistically fair, a little over 1 in 3 are registered Republicans...so say, if that's 35% & Log Cabin types are 0.05%, do you realize how much inordinate catering is being done here?]
Who said anything about catering to them? I don’t want that at all. I just want their votes because it’s good for them, as well as all of us.
If nobody knows that you’re queer, nobody will discriminate against you for BEING queer! Keep it out of everyone else’s face and you’ll be fine.
