Sarah Palin, in an interview that is a part of the lead up to the Nov. 17 release of her new book "Going Rogue," appeared on Oprah Winfrey's TV show on Nov. 16. Aside from the questions about the campaign, she expressed her irritation with "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric, or as she referred to her - "the perky one."

"Now, obviously, you've why didn't you just name some books or magazines?" Winfrey asked.

Palin explained that she didn't want to come off as unprofessional, but she detected an elitist vibe from Couric with the infamous question about her reading habits.

My goodness. I haven’t seen Oprah in years. She is huge. I wonder if she is on a see-food diet?

I think Sarah’s explanation was obvious and she sort of explained this at the time. It was insulting to ask her what newspapers she reads, as if she didn’t read any. But Sarah underestimated the press’s ability to be absurd. As if she never reads a newspaper.

Courick is getting too old to be called "the perky one."

Maybe "the beef jerky one."

The McCain campaign should have put Oprah on one of those diets. Talk about a lost cause LOL

I always thought that the best answer to a question like “What kind of magazines and newspapers shape your world view” would be “Katie, an adult worldview should be much more mature than the kind of fluff you find in women’s magazines and the deliberate misinformation often found in newspapers like the NY Times. The great philosophers and writers of the past, along with my own nascent experiences and calculations forms my worldview.”

Then she should have smiled and said, “Is your worldview determined by the shortsighted and deadline driven 300 word article one normally finds in newspapers? That’s a very unreliable way to come to a conclusion, Katie.”

I suggest watching the interview closely. To me, it looks like in the question before the newspaper one, both Palin and Couric were both smiling and and walking along. As Couric starts to ask the newspaper question, it looks like they may have walked a little further and stopped and the demeanor and obht women’s faces have changed. Not only are the smiles gone but Sarah Palin looks like she’s already annoyed. Was there an edited gap in there and, if so, what was it and why did it change the emotional dynamic of the interview.

As for the question itself, it’s an urban liberal question that can easily be answered by any Democrat (all they have to do is name their local left-wing urban paper) but it’s a mine-field for conservatives. For eample, if Palin had mentioned the Anchorage Daily News, she might have stepped in to a follow up about that paper not endorsing her, for example, or that paper’s provincialness.

If Sarah thought she was going to get a fair interview from Couric, she was living in fantasyland.

"The perky one" -- good stuff.

I may be mistaken, (though rarely wrong, lol) but I believe that it was Rush who saddled Kouric with that moniker--"The Perky One" which would lead one to believe that Sarah listens to Rush?

Another feather in her cap and an elevation in statute in my eyes.

They wanted to criticize Sarah for not reading the Wash Post, N.Y. Times, Time, Newsweek, etc. If she said she reads the Anchorage paper only, for example, they would criticize her for her limited reading. USA Today would not be intellectual or sophisticated enough to suit Katie. Wall Street Journal would be too conservative and too focused on the GOP stereotype of favoring the wealthy, etc. etc.

“If Sarah thought she was going to get a fair interview from Couric, she was living in fantasyland.”

And if Couric or anyone else thinks they can take Sarah out with Alinsky tactics, where are they living?
