The new bishop of the Indiana diocese in which the University of Notre Dame is located is a critic of the universitys decision to award President Barack Obama an honorary degree. Bishop Kevin Rhoades, the one-time rector of Mount St. Marys Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., had served as bishop of his native Diocese of Harrisburg since 2004 before being transferred to the Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend on November 14.
Bishop Rhoades, who recently declared a diocean Marian year and has a strong track record of attracting vocations to the priesthood, issued a statement in March condemning the Obama administrations decision to fund embryonic stem cell research. After the University of Notre Dame decided to award President Obama an honorary degree, Paul Schenk-- the pro-life activist whom Bishop Rhoades named head of his diocesan pro-life office-- wrote:
Bishop Rhoades also supports those who exercise their freedom of conscience and speech to express their opposition to the universitys decision to have President Obama as commencement speaker and honoree. In fact, Bishop Rhoades has written to the president of the university to express his disagreement with the universitys action
It is Bishop Rhoades hope and prayer that all the institutions that bear the name Catholic will affirm the Churchs teachings, expose the culture of death and build up the Culture of Life.

Now would be a good time to revoke the degree.

Some pre-[hopeful] celebration:
Rally sons of Notre Dame:
Sing her glory and sound her fame,
Raise her Gold and Blue
And cheer with voices true:
Rah, rah, for Notre Dame
We will fight in ev-ry game,
Strong of heart and true to her name
We will ne'er forget her
And will cheer her ever
Loyal to Notre Dame
Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to victory.

Wow, I'll say. It's wonderful this is a Bishop that has spoken out against Obama coming to Notre Dame. It sure seems like a healthy start ... and he looks like he's young and spry enough to do the job. And he loves Notre Dame!
