Experts question motives of mammogram guidelines (Here comes healthcare rationing)

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Cancer experts fear new U.S. breast imaging guidelines that recommend against routine screening mammograms for women in their 40s may have their roots in the current drive in Washington to reform healthcare.

Critics of the guidelines, issued on Monday by the U.S. Services Task Force, an independent panel sponsored by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Quality, say the new guidelines are a step backward and will lead to more cancer deaths.

* Dr Carol Lee, chairwoman of the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Commission, said she fears insurers -- both private and public -- will use them to pare back health costs.

"These new recommendations seem to reflect a conscious decision to ration care," Lee said in a statement.

I told my wife this morning that this reduction in breast screening was just the beginning of trying to reduce health costs by rationing what people can due regarding health care. It is so obvious. I cannot believe people cannot see through this.

This is the first Death Panel.
Women in their 40s, who today will be cured, will die in the future.
Because their cancer will be so advanced by the time it’s caught , it will be a death sentence.
And it’s only the beginning .
This is an outrage and every woman and the husbands and sons and fathers and brothers who love them,
should be screaming in fury at Barry.
If Republican women are smart-they’ll coalesce around this .
A press conference with everyone from Laura Ingraham,( a survivor ) to Liz Cheney, Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, et al would draw attention to this abomination.
It’s all about money , money, money.
Money for ACORN and the slush funds and graft for the Democrats.
Every medical screening has false positives or areas that need further testing.
Extra views, compression mamms, Ultrasound ,MRIs and guided biopsies done in the office under local, cost money, but, save lives.
And are non invasive.
We’re not talking open heart surgery.
And telling women to no longer self exam - is jaw dropping.
I doubt any woman who was caught early or given a clean bill after all, is anything, but, grateful.
And you can bet your last dollar that Nancy Pelosi and Michelle Obama will get their mammograms every year.
If they’re willing to sacrifice women in their 40s,
granny and gramps don’t have a chance.

They also recommended that docs quit telling women to do breast self exams. Now those are free!! So I guess they want to ration actions so that no cancer is found before its time.

If breast exams were part of an accepted protocol, then any patient who didn't want to comply with the new screening guidelines could report feeling something that "wasn't there before", and if her doctor didn't like the new guidelines, and put her interests ahead of the state, he would "feel" it too. This would undermine the efforts to restrict the usage of mammograms.
