As Sen. Joe Lieberman, Connecticut independent, officially begins his inquiry this week into the disturbing failures that enabled Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan to stay in uniform, it must go beyond the normal excuses related to bureaucratic bungling.
With the discussion this week devolving into interagency finger-pointing, lost has been the simple fact that the failures were systemic. Although the military has done valiant work fighting in Muslim lands, it doesn't seem to grasp how to assess when Muslim personnel could pose an internal threat.
It's easy to rely on hindsight to second-guess after the fact, but based on what we already know, Maj. Hasan had openly embraced Islamic jihadist ideology. Apparently no one who learned of his online screeds or his verbal rants to colleagues understood this, however.
What officials knew about Maj. Hasan was neither trivial nor inconsequential.
In spring, Maj. Hasan wrote an Internet posting that compared suicide bombers to soldiers who sacrifice their lives by falling on a grenade. His reasoning was that suicide bombers "help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers."
No more explicit justification could be made for the terrorists who have been targeting U.S. service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet reports indicate there was no formal investigation into a soldier who praised suicide bombers who "save Muslims" by killing the very people among whom he lived and worked.
More ominous is that only mild concern was sparked by Maj. Hasan's repeated contacts with a cleric openly affiliated with al Qaeda. Although the content of the 10 to 20 e-mails has been described officially as related to "religious guidance" and Maj. Hasan's "research," no rationale could possibly exist for any soldier independently contacting a high-level enemy figure.

That's going to encompass 2007 when the Washington Post (and other periodicals) raised a stink about a bad paint job, mold and missing plaster in Building 18.
The MSM managed to distract the top commanders at Walter Reed AND finally got them removed by the current Secretary of Defense.
Even Donna Shalala got involved in that one (for whatever reason), and it only takes a couple of minutes to concoct a "They knew about Hasan and sought to protect him by going after the only people who would or could remove him from the service."
If "Posties" were in contact with this Jihadi and conspired to protect him by undermining his senior officers, it's time to get old sparky refurbished.
You'd better believe Obama and his little buddies suspect this and that's why he wants to delay any and all investigations. He fears his closest friends will be uncovered as being less than trustworthy.
Ok, after a grenade is rolled into an officers' tent and now Ft. Hood, one would think they'd be hard pressed not to have assessment of the situation slap them up against the head.
How can you miss a brightly colored neon sign flashing on and off: “ISLAMIC TERRORIST?”
The Military did not miss the signs. The politicians in and out of the Military refused to acknowledge the obvious.
Starting with the Carter Administration, the government watered down the primary mission of an agency by adding offices and making their importance equal to the main purpose of the organization.
Now achieving the primary mission is sometimes not as important as affirmative action, diversity, equal employment opportunity, and more. Meeting your quota for the acceptable mix of females, blacks, Asians, alternate lifestyles and training to ensure that managers got it right.
There was a time when people were hired because they were the best qualified candidate for the job. Now we pretend that the person selected was the absolute best when we really did it to meet our quota, telling ourselves that it does not really matter. We also had quotas for hiring minority firms, women owned organizations, and others. It mattered not the quality of their product, or their capability to get the job done; it mattered not how much money we were spending. What mattered is that we could check that box during our next performance evaluation meeting.
The mess we are in as a result will not be corrected very easily or very quickly, IMO. We have a great tangle of funding and organizations with strong links to political appointees and interrelationships not easily undone. Sad but true.
For the umpthtenth time, there were no missed signs.
There were signs that were ignored.
Even an obama voter should have the intelligence to understand that.

They didn’t miss them. They ignored them. They feared punishment/demotion/retribution for turning in a Soldier of Allah.
If Malik Handjob had been a white Christian involved in a militia movement, or Confederate history group, I don’t think the powers that be would be so hands-off. And the irony is, if he was a member of those other groups—it’s highly doubtful those soldiers would have been gunned down by him.
The signs were not missed.
Everytime one points out a muslim terrorist, we are convicted of being racist. And our “government” backs CAIR and their minions.
They have us right where they want us.

Killing two and wounding 14.
There was and most likely still exists, a template ..that is being ignored.
It has already killed 14 soldiers , one civilian, one unborn fetus and wounded 44.
Unless things change, the pattern will be ignored and the killing cycle will continue.
I am not surprised that a terrorist incident happened on Ft. Hood. I am surprised it took so long, but I do not think it will be the last one.
The military was/is PC infected. They didn’t want to say the emperor has no clothes.

Most telling.....and compelling PROOF that the "template," as you call it, exists. What is the response of the military and the politician class to this PROOF? Is their deafening silence their response?

It’s painfully clear. We should not allow these deaths to be political collateral, however.
