From what I have heard and with no expertise on the subject, it sounds like “dark/energy”, an ad hoc notion that helps the numbers look right but is little more than that. Different dimensions, space curled into its self, vibrating strings?
It's like describing quarks, Up, down, charm, color, words that have no meaning when used in these theories.

How does a space ship go faster than light? It uses a hyper drive engine. What is a hyper drive engine? A device that bends space around it. Now do you understand?
I've explained it but just can't quite get the math to work out. So I introduce the Hyperbole Drive and that makes it all work. Or at least better than Enterprise's Warp Engines.
